Seems texas handles storms the same way we do in florida...peace4myheart wrote:I am from Houston, Texas and Ike is heading straight for us. when I was in Houston after Katrina I remember having to evac for rita. That was terrible. 24 hour drive from Houston to Austin. I'd stay too if evacuation measures were still that bad. Make sure you have some sort of computer battery or generator, cause the power is gonna be one of the first things to go out.peace4myheart wrote:I am from Houston, Texas and Ike is heading straight for us. Yup, I'm in The Woodlands, Texas. Not evacuating either, no school tomorrow is a plus
I'm looking forward to the hurricane actually, never really experienced one so I want to know what it is like.

From my personal experience, it's not the hurricane that's the bad part. What I hate most is the time after. 90-plus degree temperatures without electricity and running water is a bitch. Cleaning up mess around the yard sucks. Not to mention that in sparsely populated areas like my hometown (nothing but sugar cane fields around there) rodents and snakes usually take cover in or under the houses.
However, Lafayette is 3 to 4 hours west of New Orleans so we didn't even feel Katrina or any other major hurricane in years. I've never experienced anything over a category 2, and I don't think I'd stick around if it got any worse than that.

I never understoof why a hurricane prone country like u.s, makes houses out of wooded materials instead of cements. Seams to me it'll last against a hurricane more than wood does
