It feels great that the lockout has ended, Game On!
Call me a sucker, but I am returning to the NHL to cheer on for my MN Wild.
How about the rest of you all?
NHL (no 2012) 2013 season
Re: NHL (no 2012) 2013 season
Can't wait! The games start when I'm on Vacation, though... hopefully I can find a bar that airs hockey games in Nassau.

My NHL allegiances are strange. My teen years were spent mainly in Northern Virginia, and I love the Capitals, but I clearly live in Red Wing territory.

I need to post a picture of my hockey sweaters.Blu wrote:My NHL allegiances are strange.
My allegiances are all over the place. I'm a Blackhawks fan at heart, but I root for several teams. Ray Bourque was my childhood hero, so I'm also a huge Bruins fan. And when he won the cup with the Avalanche I welled up like crazy. I even bought a piece of Roy's net from their Stanley Cup winning game (and for some reason I don't display it).
I love most of the original six, but since the Red Wings are the Yankees of hockey, it is fun to root against them. It's hard for me to actually "hate" a NHL team as I love the sport so much.
OH! Time for me to watch MYSTERY ALASKA again. The girl who played the young hot shot's girlfriend reminds me a lot of my wife.
Re: NHL (no 2012) 2013 season
Haha, I totally understand. My mom's from Massachusetts and loved the Bruins when the Bobby Orr era was going on. So it's hard not to like the Bruins--though New England Sports Teams' fans seem to be rabid
Being a military brat it was hard to really pledge allegiance to many a sports team. The Indiana Pacers of the early 1990's might be that exception. I will go to the grave knowing that Reggie Miller might be my favorite basketball player ever.
For Hockey though, the Red Wings were always a winning team when I was a kid, and most of my family lived in Michigan. They always seemed to win their division or the Stanley Cup year after year. Still, I never really was a big Red Wings supporter. And I lived in North Carolina and Columbus, Ohio before they had the 'Canes and Blue Jackets. But after living in Virginia three different times in my life, it was easy to pull for the Capitals. We've had Adam Oates, Dale Hunter, Jaromir Jager, Sergei Federov (after his winning stint on the Red Wings). And we have Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green (Game Over: fantastic nickname, especially on this forum), who are amazing athletes. Yet, we play strong all season then die out when the playoffs arrive. It's a little disappointing, but Ovechkin is a wonder on the ice and always fun to watch.
That's cool though about Ray Bourque, it's important to have that favorite sports hero. Even when they leave your team, you can't help but cheer them on when they're wearing the colors of your rival. It's exactly how I viewed Shaq when he left the Magic for the Lakers. Get that net framed, man. Don't even let your wife say no.

I have a picture of my wife and I kissing the Stanley Cup when the Canes won. We're both wearing Canes sweaters, mine being a Ron Francis Captain sweater. You weren't allowed to lift the cup, but I was all over it.Blu wrote: And I lived in North Carolina...

Ray embodied everything right with hockey, and it was if he was forced to leave Boston. He was loyal to his team, teammates, and family. He never dished out a dirty hit, but dished out hundreds of incredible checks. He was a role model, and a great one at that. He always gave 100% on both sides of the ice.
And he did every thing with incredible class. The reveal of #7 to #77 still gives me chills. There hasn't been an athlete like Bourque since, and sadly may never be.

Which is only more of a reason to display that net. It's a great story and you have passion for telling it, which could only lead to feel-good stories with friends.

Vancouver-born Canucks/Nashville/Kings fan that hates all the other Canadian teams here...

Every single damned time the Rangers are on tv I can't hold back from saying, "I'll play them Rangers".Yancakes wrote: That movie is better than it has any right to be.
