Easily one of my favorite anime films of all time, absolutely gorgeous in motion and amazing in every way. It's very similar to Princess Mononoke in theme, but I think it even surpasses it. I hope you enjoy it.

PS: I've also heard good things about Spice and Wolf if you don't mind a show based on ECONOMICS in a medieval fantasy. And Guin Saga is based on a long-running highly acclaimed series of fantasy novels (that I have even less knowledge of). THESE MIGHT BE CLOSER TO WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.

Or like MrPopo suggested, The Record of Lodoss War. It's pretty much the best you can get for "D&D the anime."

Some pretty good recommendations on my end of stuff I enjoyed include.

FullMetal Alchemist - It is an interesting story, short on filler and does a pretty good job developing character. You have two different series to pick from that are both pretty good, but differ in story greatly near the end.

If you want more of a Fantasy setting that is fun, but does have quite a bit of filler, the anime Slayers is light and fun, but is a bit dated.

A lot of my recommendations really sit on the movie side and really are a mixture of genres that, at times do hit the futuristic theme.

A movie I can not recommend enough is the movie Macross Plus, not the OVA, do the movie edition, simply because the scenes are edited more coherently and they remove some of the out of place mech action scenes that are really trying to make it a Macross movie, even though it wasn't originally meant to be. The characters are great, the soundtrack is unbearably phenomenal and the pacing of the film really works more as a character drama than anything.

I also recommend the movie Tekkonkinkreet. Directed by an american director and done by a japanese art studio, this film is a treat to the eye with such a unique art direction, great soundtrack and a very strange use of imagery in its message. I can not recommend this movie enough, yet a lot of people are offset by the way the animation looks, even though, I feel, it is beyond amazing.

I recommend these, simply because I do feel that they hold up on their own regardless of ones preference and can be enjoyed by anyone with an open mind and a desire to experience something different and emotional.

I've got a lot of first episodes of new series this season to watch tonight. Hopefully there are a few good ones in there. Certainly looking forward to season 2 of Chihayafuru. And Tamako Market is sure to be alright.

Everyone else is doing it, so I'll just reccomend Scrapped Princess for fantasy anime.

There is a bit of a 'lost technology' thing going on in it too, I figure op being a big Final Fantasy IV fan might dig that.

One of my favorite animes of all time.

I got the game for that reason, and was disappointed. The difficulty is crazy, which then leads to hours upon hours of grinding which got boring real fast, for me. Diablo it is not.

I picked up volume one of this (like episodes 1-4 maybe) and really enjoyed it.

I'm looking forld stuff now stuff from the 80s when Anime was unique and Otaku was still an insult instead of a badge of honor.

I'd love some old Macross but there's no real way to get Do you Remember love in English (subbed) I only have Macross Plus.

I also want to check out Yatterman due to Tatsunoko VS Capcom but again, not even fan subbed.

I HATED Tekkamen Blade I swear if I hear D-BOY one more time.......I will hurt somebody.
