Wii firmware upgrade question

Post by chupon »

Just got a Wii from another member here. It's got homebrew on it with an SD card for snes emulation.

I can run a legit copy of Mario Galaxy. My other game is Xenoblade.

When I pop in a North American copy of Xenoblade the Wii says it needs to update the firmware and then gives me a warning about homebrew being lost, etc.

I opted to not update and held the power button in for 4 seconds to restart without downloading any updates.

Soooo - what to do here? If I update my Wii does the update come from somewhere on the Xenoblade disk or is it a wifi download? Will I actually lose info on my SD card? Will I brick my new used Wii? Can I just pop out the SD card and do the update and then pop it back in?

Any help would be appreciated.

Prii-loader, thats what i use, it blocks updates from disc and online.

*ignore this next part if you dont care about the wii shop*

Also if you still want to go on the e-shop, youll need a update wad to by pass the official nintendo download.

Also, prii-loader is super easy to install, just put in apps folder and run from home-brew channel, to access it after install, just hold down the wii reset button when you turn it on.

I feel i cant say enough good things about prii-loader, without it i dont think i would want a modded wii, it also allows region free play if you own PAL or JAP physical copies, from the disc channel!

The Wii's method of removing homebrew is incredibly braindead. It basically removes apps by filename match. If you have the latest Homebrew Channel it will survive updating to the latest Wii firmware (4.3).
