The memories of VHS

Post by RCBH928 »

I will lie to you if I said that I remember betamax,
I don't think I ever watched a betamax "anything" , but i recall seeing them in stores and a betamax player.

But what I recall is VHS. You know VHS is not really that old. As a matter of fact, I was looking for DVD's for some wrestling in 99 , but there was only VHS!

I have hard nostalgia for older stuff, and I recall watching VHS was really exciting. Sure DVD is clearer, and you jump scenes, watch extras and trailers, chose your subtitle, more effecient in space and I guess last longer than a tape that gets chewed up. yet there was something exciting about poping a vhs in, and watching the movie, it was like theater experience.

For me, i go get them from videoshops that tend to "pirate" the movies, so you never know what you will get digging in the video library, because unlike laser printed labels. It was a sticker label. Plus sometimes things are taped over others, so you never know what you will get! Its a mystery kind of thing.

In all honesty, I don't recall complaining of VHS quality. As a matter of fact I recently got WCW wrestling vhs from 98, and the quality was very pleasant. Do you recall VHS being bad quality?

What are your memories of VHS?
How is VHS doing in america? Do they still exist?

I think I might start a tiny VHS collection for old time's sake.

Ever try watching a porno borrowed from a friend and pirated 5 times over while trying to not get caught by parents/siblings and being 13 or 14?

I very well may be the only 19 year old I know with a Betamax player, but my memories are still from LD and VHS. To this day, I'm still actively collecting VHS tapes (Mostly Media, Wizard, Lightning, Embassy, etc.). If anyone has some good stuff, let me know!!!

Laserdisc is where it's at, though. It still compares totally favorably, image-wise, to DVD.

Someone was going to hand me a box full of betamax tapes for free, but I declined since I didn't own the player! The thing I liked about VHS was the ease of use and re-use, even to six-year olds.

I've also thought of making a small collection of VHS favorites myself. They are obviously inferior to whats out now but I can learn to accept the quality (which, like stated, isn't all that bad) along with a bit of nostalgia.

I agree with OP.

I remember going to "Video Galaxy" with my mum and brother on Friday night and picking out 2 movies. Then running home and one of use would run up and stick in the cassette all kachunk and stand by the TV while we fastforward through the gay previews because Tobin smashed the controller in some grand toy train pile up escapade last year, but allowing the good ones to play. Then finally mum needs to pee, so we pause it at the lion growling and my brother and I make lewd jokes about the lion eating this or barfing up that. And then we watch the movie and half way through the tracking goes all wonky, so mum smashes the tv a few times, shakes the VCR, calls up the movie shop and bitches them out and they say we can have 2 free movie rentals for our inconvenience. Then finally I dig into the VCR and find out it was just a crayon Ian stuck in their yesterday to "fix" the VCR. So I yank the crayon out and find the tape has spat all it's guts out, so with my pointer finger I crank the thing all back in and then fastforward for 80 bajillion years to get back to where we were and continue watching.

You just don't get all that adventure and fun out of a DVD.

Old video shops are the best. It hurts me inside every time I purchase old tapes from a store going out of business. Internet renting has really taken a chunk out of video culture.

Maybe he was referring to the porno that was spoke of earlier.

good story lordofduct....i remember my dad splicing tape cause we were crying when it snapped of the reels!

I love my VHS....i know they look like crap, but they have character. It's analog and i like the fact that it's sooo easy to dub stuff and watch it later. I guess since DVR came along it's not a big deal.

Also, I have a huge Beta max collection I'm taking offers on if anyone is interested. BETA MAX FOOL!
