I'm not getting a lot of what I'm doing right now and would really appreciate help from anyone experienced. Currently, I have a SCPH-50001 PS2 with a clear case, Codebreaker 10, official 8MB memory card, and network adapter. I have a HDD arriving soon, as well as HDDLoader.
Right now, I'm trying to set up these elf files so that they are easier to use, for both me and my girlfriend. I bought the PS2 so we could watch DivX and Xvid movies easily at her place, so it is essentially my gift to her that makes me happy as well.
I was able to install FMC onto the memory card, but nothing else. I have on my main screen uLauncherelf and a configuration program. My goal with this system is simple:
Play -
SNES
Genesis
NES
MAME
DivX
Xvid
PS2 games on the HDD
These I'm pretty sure the PS2 can do, correct? I was already able to launch a DivX movie, and it worked really well. I was impressed. My main problem is menu navigation. I need this to not only look good, but be simple enough so my girlfriend can use it when I'm not around. Is there any way to make just those elf programs show up on the main PS2 menu? If not, is there a good looking elf launcher I can replace the standard one with?
Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it.
Custom PS2 Menu?
Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
Eh, I didn't like any of the emulators for PS2. They're all worse than the ones available for DC. The real irony is one of the PS1 NES emulators is actually BETTER than the PS2 offerings. That's just sad. Also, SMS is the best player for Divx, but it still has a ton of issues and wont play a lot of my stuff, and just loves to freeze up for no reason. I hope you aren't relying on it for anything serious.
Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
Well, I have a ton of experience with the PS3 and I figured this system would be interesting to get into and modify. I really just want to play around with the emulators. I only have a handful of games I would actually play on them.Mozgus wrote:Eh, I didn't like any of the emulators for PS2. They're all worse than the ones available for DC. My main focus is PS2 games and DivX/Xvid movies, which work for the most part. I was wondering if I could put SMS Media Player on the main PS2 screen, maybe below uLaunchElf or something. Is this at all possible?
Also, how do I put these programs directly onto my memory card?

Um, yeah it's possible. I did it.Saraph wrote:Well, I have a ton of experience with the PS3 and I figured this system would be interesting to get into and modify. Just get v1.6, and read the instructions. All the apps are on the forum.

That is exactly what i wanted. Thank you! And I have asked there, but no response as of yet.Mozgus wrote:Um, yeah it's possible. Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
Glad to see you got help but you should've read a little more before asking. The media playing capability of ps2 is not that good, I would recommend you think about a softmodded xbox. While it is rather big it has excellent compatibility with most encoded formats out there, it is easier to navigate with the xbox media center application, its probably cheap to get one. And if you have one of them new tvs you can watch it all in beautiful 720p.
Mine's hooked on the network so have a folder with 100+ movies on the pc and when we wanna watch a film I have it set up so you can see the movie posters on the list and if nobody knows the movie you just get into the trailer section and see what its all about. There are tons of setting you can tweak to view videos the way you want them. It also has better emulation overall and quite decent games, just my thoughts.

Consoles: NES, Famicom, SNES, GC, GB DMG, GB Pocket, GBC, GBA, DSI XL, N64, VBoy, NDS, 3DSXL, Wii, SMS, GEN+CD+32X, GG, SAT, DC, WS, WS Color, NGPC, XBOX, 360, PS1, PSone, PS2, PSP, PS3, 3DO, CD-I, NGCD, Actionmax, TG16+CD, TE, PCE-DUO, Odyssey2, Playdia, 2600, Lynx & JAG.
Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
Well, I wanted the PS2 for my girlfriends room. We'll watch the occassional movie there, notthat I want to be a media center and to be honest, I wanted to see if I could do it all. I did, I'm happy with the result. I knew the PS2 pretty much sucks as a media center. Now onto the XBOX my brother gave me to fix... I'm buying a 360 for him anyways, so I'll keep this to fix and mod.executioner wrote:Glad to see you got help but you should've read a little more before asking. Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
The xbox owns as a media center (once it's modded of course, but it's dead easy to softmod em, I do em in less than 10 minutes now). It's nowhere near as portable as the PS2 though.

Re: Custom PS2 Menu?
Really? Less then 10 minutes! What do I need. Is there a good guide to softmodding it? I was thinking of putting a 300GB HDD in it and installing XBOXMedia Center.
Is it simple to get games and movies onto the system once all is done?

Yes, to all! Get softmod installer deluxe, you can even find pdf guides with screens and step by step instructions. You need a specific game, usb stick and a usb to xbox cable. In all you'll probably spend about $15 maybe. If its seems to complicated for you, vlame has a softmod kid rental:

I'll have to ask him for comission. I think this topic has been covered a lot here, also visit xbox-scene for tutorials:

You have a lot of catching up to do, xbox modding is way ahead of PS2 which is just starting to show its true potential. The good thing is you will be able to enjoy both worlds.
