Sega Saturn Arcade Ports?

Post by Krejlooc »

The Sega Saturn has a reputation of being home to quite a number of really high quality arcade ports, but usually the discussion revolves around the usual capcom fighting games - Vampire Savior, Street Fighter Zero 3, X-men vs Street Fighter, etc. There are actually quite a number of non-fighting game arcade ports for the saturn that were similarly definitive home ports at the time. Yet finding a a comprehensive list of great Saturn arcade ports is difficult.

Hence this topic, I'd like to collectively come up with such a list. The criteria will be loose - if the game appeared in the arcade and the quality of the port is generally agreed to be near arcade-perfect, then it gets added to the list. This will include ST-V games, for example, but not model 2 games because the saturn versions are technically a step back. EDIT: On second thought, let's go ahead and create a different category for those games, and we'll call those conversions. The criteria being generally adequate conversions of arcade games, that are noticably not perfect. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 goes here, for example, for the smaller sprites and shang tsung load times. Here's what I can think of to begin with:

Ports:
-------
1942
1943
1943 Kai
Area 51
Afterburner 2
BakuBaku
Battle Garegga
Batsugun
Batman Forever
Cotton 2
Cotton Boomerang
Commando
Darius Gaiden
Darius 2
Die Hard Arcade
Fantasy Zone
Gale Racer*
Gokujou Parodius
Gunnbird
Guardian Legend
Ghost n Goblins
Ghouls n Ghosts
Gradius
Gradius 2
Game Paradise
Golden Axe: The Duel
Hyper Duel
Image Fight
In the Hunt
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
Kingdom Grandprix
King of Fighters 95
King of Fighters 96
King of Fighters 97
Liquid Kids
Layer Section
Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge
Metal Slug
Marvel Superheroes vs Street Fighter
Mercs
Metal Black
Maximum Force
Magical Drop 3
Outrun
Power Drift
Puyo Puyo Sun
Pu-Li-Ru-La
Parodius
Radiant Silvergun
Revolution X
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Shienryu
Soukyugurentai
Salamander
Salamander 2
Samurai Spirits 3
Samurai Spirits 4
Space Harrier
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II'
Street Fighter II' Turbo
Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Street Fighter Zero
Street Fighter Zero 2
Street Fighter Zero 3
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II
Sengoku Blade
Sexy Parodius
Sol Divide
Tant-r
Thunder Force AC
Vampire Savior
Waku Waku 7
WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game
X-Multiply
X-men vs Street Fighter
Virtua Fighter Kids
Virtua Fighter Remix

Conversions:
------
Dead or Alive
Donpachi
DoDonpachi
Daytona USA
Fatal Fury 3
Fighting Vipers
Galaxy Force II
House of the Dead
Last Bronx
Mortal Kombat 2
Primal Rage
Sega Rally Championship
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Virtua Cop
Virtua Cop 2
Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter 2
Virtual On

*Arguably - it is the only home port, and it's accurate except for load screens and polygon cars instead of sprites. Everything else, including the track, is exactly as it was in the arcade.

I know there have to be more I'm missing. Any input?

Shienryu
Soukyugurentai
Guardian Legend
Cotton 2

Hopefully this is the sort of thing you were looking for. There are definitely more, but those are what I can think of.

This is the exact type of stuff I'm looking for. I'm about to go to sleep, but I'll update the OP with whatever posts are made between now and when I wake up in the morning.

I think you should probably note which games are only available as part of compilations such as all of the Capcom Generations stuff for example.

I don't know if these are considered great ports or not, as I've only really seen videos of them (they look pretty decent to me).

Pu-Li-Ru-La
Parodius and Gokujou Parodius (part of Gokujou Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack)
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius
Sexy Parodius

The Saturn port of Bubble Bobble is apparently pretty good. Bubble Symphony I'd wager as being a quality port as well.

Great idea for a list maybe we should do other systems as well. I know not all can be arcade perfect, maybe we should list the ones that are not arcade perfect with an asterisk.

Kinda broad, don't you think? File this one next to "Xbox 360 first person shooters" :D

But seriously, yes, yes, yes and yes.

Cotton 2, Sexy Parodius, maybe not the best games but arguably the most amazing looking on the Saturn.
1. Guilty Gear
2. Dimahoo
3. Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
