Very forgettable. I mean, it's one of those average shows I watched that was easy to get through, but definitely had some flaws. My biggest issue was the insane plot armor around the main characters and villains. There was just no critical death's when it felt like it could have happened several times and so just no real emotion at all. It had some Starcraft-esque elements with how these space bugs would come out making me think of the Zerg or something, but yeah never really did much with that cool stuff and the "strategic" stuff the show hinted at during only a few episodes.o.pwuaioc wrote:Has anyone seen Heroic Age? If so, is it any good?
You can do far far better with plenty of other mecha choices out there, but also far worse. So.. it's just really subpar at best.
I'd easily take it over Zegapain though, another more recent mecha show I watched last year or something. That one was insanely boring and littered with the stupid school setting / bullcrap that plagues most modern mecha nowadays. So, one point for Heroic Age not having that crap.
If you're interested in some mecha, old or new let me know and I can maybe make some suggestions if you want. Definitely one of my favorite genres, but I've run it a bit dry at this point... I don't have much else to see beyond some obscure ones and unsubbed shows. I'm watching Escaflowne myself now and digging it, bruno just finished it up himself but it really wasn't for him haha. Definitely does have a hint of shoujo to it. I hear the movie is a lot darker though so I look forward to that.
Votoms is up there with the pinnacle of not only mecha, not only sci-fi, but anime in general for me. So if you like older stuff, I cannot praise this one enough and all of its sequels revolving around the main character were actually pretty damn good, some 20 years apart and the director was able to capture the vibe of the series time and time again, really amazing how he pulled that off. All around though, the main series itself is my favorite part of the whole thing. Sci-fi/militaristic anime at its finest. The director also did Dougram which heavily inspired the Battletech franchise from what I know. That one is also insanely good, filled with politics and pretty comparable to Legend of the Galactic Heroes to me. Also I'm pretty sure Layzner will be like the best thing ever (same director/creator again), it's just too bad the subs are taking FOREVER. Like, 2-3 episodes released a year at times, it is so utterly painful.
Don't want to go too overboard with you there but yeah, haha. VOTOMS!!! It's like the um... Technosoft / Thunder Force of anime, you've got Macross and Gundam who are like R-Type and Gradius, and Thunder Force / Votoms should always be mentioned as well next to these juggernauts. Hopefully that made some sense.

I think he's mostly interested in the Greek mythology aspect of it.
I just watched it and liked it a lot more. It's weird, different story, characters look and act different. More steampunk too. A good comparison would be the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series and this 3rd movie that changes everything. My complaints about the series were not present in the movie, thankfully.Xeogred wrote:I hear the movie is a lot darker though so I look forward to that.

Well if that's the case then definitely don't even bother with Heroic Age.brunoafh wrote:I think he's mostly interested in the Greek mythology aspect of it.

So, I'm going to write a Haruhi fanfiction. I've got the first chapter done, and I'd love to have someone to give me feedback or just talk about where the story is going.
It'll take me a while to write the whole thing, but if someone wants to chat about this series with me or just bounce ideas off each other that would be awesome.
@heroic age - I watched the first few episodes a few months back and found them utterly boring. When I looked up reviews, everyone said the first part was the best. I guess it's hard to get into.
If you do like it, more power to ya.

Got a Books a Million giftcard for Christmas. Picked up Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, haven't watched it yet. I'll admit that I've never had the urge to watch any Studio Ghibli stuff, but this film looked intriguing.
Also got some Love Hina and Ghost in the Shell manga. I don't read much manga (cuz I'd rather watch anime), but I'd like to finish the Love Hina series. And maybe reading Ghost in the Shell will help me understand the film more...

Yeah, what brunoafh said. I somehow missed the updates to this thread until today, so I saw an episode anyway. It was meh.Xeogred wrote:Well if that's the case then definitely don't even bother with Heroic Age.brunoafh wrote:I think he's mostly interested in the Greek mythology aspect of it.
In that case, can you guys recommend non-mecha stuff? The more fantastic (in the sense of Western fantasy) the better, hopefully also being a good show as well. I realize that everyone loves the futuristic stuff, but it's not my favorite.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, Record of the Lodoss War is the go-to for western fantasy in anime.

It might too obvious a choice but Fullmetal Alchemist as well as FMA: Brotherhood - watch both!
Also I'd recommend finding/watching Baccano! It's a total blast set in the 1930s - just be aware that the first two or three episodes are kind of confusing but it's one of those series that GETS SO MUCH BETTER. It has some fantasy elements, but to say anything about it would be a spoiler. Just watch it!
