Are there any knock-off portable Genesis consoles? I'm thinking of something along the lines of the FC-16.

There are many of them, but all of them play roms not original Mega Drive cartridges.

Untrue.

If you want to play cartridges, the genmobile is a viable option. Not perfect, but viable.

I'll echo what others have said. As a collector's piece it's interesting, but unless you can find it for cheap like I did, or else just really, really want one, than don't bother. The battery life alone just doesn't make it feasible. I will say, that it is neat that with the right cable you can connect it to the television and play your Genesis games on the TV, making it a fully functional home system as well as a handheld, but why do that when the Genesis is the much cheaper alternative?

This is my opinion on whether it's worth it to buy a Sega Nomad:

Yeah stock, these days, they arent worth it. But with modded battery, you get good battery life.

Awesome thanks for the input guys...yeah I will just keep an eye out for it in garage sales really. I do NOT want to spend that much money on it! Any good suggestions for portable Genesis players that do not run on roms? I see one...any others?

+1
I had one as a kid. Granted playing MK2 in full 16 bit quality on the playground was badazz, you had to be super rich to keep purchasing the double AA's to keep that thing going. I bought an a/c adapter after about a month or so but at that point why not just sit and play on a normal genesis on an actual tv?
Unless your just picking one up to say you have one, don't bother.

Re: Sega Nomad - Is it Worth it?
Purchasing a Nomad can be pretty expensive, I paid $75 for the nomad and $40 for the Battery pack about three years ago I don't really regret it I enjoyed the use I had with it, I had it next to my bed and would play it before I went to sleep. The headphone input was cool to since its pretty loud with headphones. I always wanted a Nomad so it was worth it for me, but considering that you can buy a 3DS or vita for a few for bucks it puts the purchase into question.
