Haha, yeah I totally thought that for years.

Gonna have to skim this thread. I may or may not join on this one, I've wanted to play it for ages now... but just not sure if the mood is right for now.

But if Jmustang1968 is a fan then that's a plus for me since we agree on a lot of RPG's! haha
It is definitely a change of pace from the traditional jrpg, but I love the managing of the party, developing them, and exploring the world.

IMO that ruins the role-playing aspect of it, which is a large part of the fun with this kind of game. I also usually play lawful good characters, so even if it would be easier for me to kill someone and take their stuff instead of going on a quest, I'd rather go on the quest.

I'm not above re-rolling the hell out of a character to get good stats. This is my Paladin:
Str: 18/28
Dex: 10 (now 18 thanks to magic gauntlets)
Con: 18
Int: 10
Wis: 16
Cha: 18
That is a great overall character roll...

Too bad the 18/28 str is so low
The members of my party are Minsc, Garrick, Imoen, Dynaheir, and Branwen. I'm considering myself done with Nashkell and am now back in Beregost. If memory serves, I expect to be doing a lot of exploration in forests for bandit camps soon!

Here's what I don't like about Baldur's Gate. So I went to the Bandit Camp. It's the next stop based on the main story! I've done some side-quests! I get there and what happens in the main building? My party is killed. So I reload my save... and the party is killed. Repeat this about 30 times and I feel like I just need to step back from my computer for a little bit!

The combat is nothing but fustrating.

Right now I'm making my way through the knoll stronghold.

I get the feeling I'm majorly underleveled? Only two in my party are level 2. The other 3 are just a short ways behind though.

That's where I am

I am going to go do more sidequests, as I can keep the fight close right now and am guessing a little level boost should probably do me.

I haven't found this to be true at all, as long as I keep in mind tactical management throughout. It's about finding the right strategies for various parts of the game.

Also, I've played about 90% so far on the iPad

I'm playing the original from GoG. The interface and controls are just a bit grating. With dice roll based combat on top of the old UI, it's a bit tiresome. Especially since party members only seem to take my commands as suggestions.

Still enjoying the game though. Just can't take more than 30-40 minutes of it at a time.

For that part, yes. I don't know the members of your party, but I only had 4-5 members at that point and they were all level 3/4. Too many random encounters in that section not to take the time and do enough sidequests to level them up!

Having 3 people proficient with bows helps too

Pause is your friend. Also buff with your cleric/druid.

When you get into a tough encounter, hit the space bar. Issue some commands then unpause. If you tell your guy to attack someone he will. Then hit some guys with magic missiles.

Go after the mages first, and if you have a pesky archer enemy, get a melee guy on him so he will switch to his melee weapon.

Try different tactics each time. Go after different guys first, try to lure some enemies away before you encounter all of them.

If you dont care about the together retro thing and you just want to play a BG game, go for Baldur's Gate 2. It's right up there with Chrono Trigger, Ultima 7, Fallout 2, Final Fantasy 6/7 etc and it's considered to be the best RPG of all time by many DnD and RPG fans.

No other game quite emulates the Dungeons and Dragons experience like Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and a wealth of tight, colorful writing makes that possible. Every Dungeons and Dragons campaign is comprised of interesting scenarios, and Shadows of Amn delivers. The game is a dense, varied experience, a tour of a variety of writing styles, dialects, and personalities. Although occasionally too silly for its own good, Baldur's Gate II has an unforgettable cast of characters, and their multi-faceted, complex interactions earn the game its spot on this list more so than intricate quests and fantastically nerdy item descriptions. When you enter the Underdark and half your party abandons you due to inter-party dissension, you know you're playing one of the greatest and best written RPGs of all time.

Are you pausing the game? In RPGs with real time pause in many of the more demanding battles you will spend around 80% of the time having the game paused, issuing commands, managing and using inventory items and moving your characters (character placement can be very crucial at times in a game like this).
