Best gaming-related Youtube personalities

Post by Retrogamer0001 »

Having been an avid gamer/collector for more years than I care to count, I find it pretty interesting to see the collections some people on Youtube have as well as to hear about their gaming-related stories and experiences. Though I started out watching AVGN videos in 2008, I find my tastes have changed pretty dramatically over the years and now enjoy watching more informative, "educational" gaming videos. I've really started to enjoy the Happy Console Gamer's series of videos as he always talks about a certain game or system in relation to his past experiences with it. Who else do you guys enjoy watching or would recommend others watch?

This is my television thesedays. ClassicGameRoom is one my consistent favorites as well, though I hated some of the newer stuff he did with other people. I think he's fine on his own. Happy Console Gamer is a bit different though in that he's a bit more personal often talking about his experiences and past with the games, which is also really interesting to me so I dig him a lot too lately. I'm insanely confused by his age though, lol has he ever said how old he is?

My best guess would be somewhere in his mid-thirties, as he talks about growing up in the early eighties. I really enjoy how personal his videos are - his one on skipping school to play video games is one of my favorites on Youtube. I could literally listen to the guy reminisce about gaming for hours!

For looking at people's collections, I like Finngamer. He's a classy dude

For just watching people play stuff with entertaining commentary, just do a youtube search on "two best friends play" and watch anything of theirs. Beyond that, I pretty much hate "Let's Play" type stuff. There's too much of it clogging up youtube these days and it's kind of obnoxious. I hate it when things get trendy and everybody and their grandmother has to jump on the bandwagon.

Ever seen the Retsuprae stuff? It's basically a few guys riffing on bad let's plays and the like MST3K style.

I agree about Let's Plays: They're pretty obnoxious. I think part of it is that most let's players don't have a lot of substantive things to say about the games they're playing, or certainly not enough to fill the time. Which means most let's plays degrade into random, incoherent babbling, or complete silence.

If you want another level of 'Why the hell am I watching this?' you could try Japanese Jikkyou Plays, which are obviously in Japanese, but as the name suggests, the jikkyou players just give you a play-by-play of what they're doing on screen in a typically monotone, or otherwise infuriatingly monotonous way.

All that said, I typically watch Classic Game Room pretty consistently. I don't particularly like TJ or some of the other people that work on the show occasionally, but I certainly don't hate them as much as some people seem to. I also don't really understand the criticism of the show being 'SO MUCH BETTER' back when it was originally a two-host show. Yeah, those episodes are good too, but better? I'd say that's really relative.

Also, even though I just shit on Let's Plays pretty heavily, I've been watching Game Grumps quite a bit lately: If I'm going to watch two dudes dick around in Nintendo games while trying their hardest to make each other laugh I guess it may as well be JonTron (meh) and EgoRaptor (eh) at the helm. Also a lot of the fan-made Game Grumps Animated-s are pretty funny.

I've also been a fan of futurematt5 for a while. He's a big shmup enthusiast, but as time has progressed, and I've put more time into shooters, myself, I've come to the realization that he's not all that good at them. That's not really here nor there, though, as he's passionate about the games, and has some interesting insight at times.

I watch a ton of YouTube gaming channels. There's a lot of good guys out there:

-Angry Video Game Nerd
-Classic Game Room
-CGR Undertow
-G4 Icons - Not really a "YouTube original", but this is the best video game show ever produced, IMO, and it's great these are now on YouTube.
-Gamester81
-Irate Gamer - Whenever the hell he decides to finally post a new video, they're usually pretty good.
-MetalJesusRocks
-TurboViews - It's a been a while since I've seen a new review from him, I'm starting to wonder if he's done.

I also used to watch the ROB the Robot reviews, but I'm pretty sure he's done. I haven't seen a new ROB review in a looooong time.

They're kind of obnoxious themselves but yeah, I love their stuff for Navgtr's "Gaming in the Clinton Years" stuff.

I don't hate LP's as much as you guys I guess, but the only guy I've ever cared to follow and watch a ton of is easily HCBailey. Give this guy a shot if you want. The guy pretty much makes it his damn job, does like multiple "test runs" through games before even starting the LP. They are both incredibly informative and he's got quite the funny/awkward persona, recurring jokes and hilarity like that when you've seen a lot. Huge fan of this guy, but yeah never really cared for any other LPers as much.

Worth noting he is extremely JRPG exclusive though. But yeah I watched some of his entire LP's for FFIII (NES... "A SECRET PASSAAAAAGE, HIDDEN TREASUUUURE!"), the Quintet games, and other stuff. He isn't overly crude or obnoxious, knows what he's doing in a game, never spoils stuff, and yep. Good stuff. I couldn't really get into FFIV The After Years (plus handhelds give me horrible neck-aches), so I might just watch that whole LP as well. lol
