Yeah from things I've always heard, it always sounds just as weird as described there.

It's entirely different from the previous games, but by no means bad. It's just extremely unforgiving and strangely difficult for a JRPG. So it's very polarizing. It has it's fans though.

It feels like the result of a team wanting to make a unique JRPG, but Capcom wanting them to tag the BoF name on it to appeal to an already existing fanbase.

This is incorrect, the game is called Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter in Japan. For whatever reason they dropped the V when they localized it though.

I'm actually playing through BoF II right now. I'm at the end. I'm at the 2nd to last boss, and for the life of me, I can't beat him. I've unleashed Ryu's Green Dragon Attack on him like 4-5 times, and that attack takes a whopping 999 HPs. Yet I still die everytime.

I looked up a guide online finally, and it says I should have my party leveled up to 37...I have Ryu at freaking level 45 and my other party members not far behind! So it should be a breeze! And I do have the the full Dragon Equipment & Dragon Sword equipped on Ryu. I DON'T GET IT!!!

I decided to see if Breath of Fire 2's translation is as bad as I have read. I only played up to the point where I am actually free to walk around and fight, but it seems perfectly fine. It's just as good as any other 16 or 32 bit Japanese RPG translation.

Anyway, I am still working on the first game for my first time. I'm about to continue my game right now.

I'm trying to enjoy this game but it isn't going very well. When I play Final Fantasy II or Legend of Dragoon, I think, "goddamn this game is great, why have I been procrastinating?"

When I play Breath of Fire, I think:
Why are these items and spells named so cryptically?
Why am I in a random battle literally every three seconds?
Why are the battles so boring?
This translation is second only to Secret of Mana in how brief and chopped up it seems.

You guys know my SoM love by now...

I swear though, never played the re-translation of that one yet. I'll have to check it out next time I replay the game. Maybe I'll love it even MORE!?!

Interesting that you mention Secqret of Mana since the dialog in that game frustrated me just as Breath of Fire does. It has the same lack of direction and almost zero explanation for the plot. We needed the SNES CD to fit the proper amount of text! Or learn to read Japanese, I suppose.

From what I've read, the Japanese dialog in SoM isn't much better. It removes some of the ambiguities that were introduced in the SNES translation, but the overall sparseness of plot was there in the Japanese release.
