Ok I got it set up where it accepts friend requests.. The friends icon only shows up when i press home and not on the home Wii U screen

Just send request through Miiverse. Otherwise, yes, you will.

Yes, just do it over Miiverse so you don't have to. (Technically, if you add them on the Friend's list it's not a "request" at all, it's more like authorization)
