Lots of fantastic 2D action games and a ton of interesting quirky/oddball titles you can't get anywhere else and some of the best arcade ports of its generation, especially when you begin looking into imports.

I'd say its at least on par with N64 in terms of library, even if the areas it excels in are completely different.
See, once you start using MAME, the Saturn just isn't as appealing. If it were a time where the Saturn was the only way I could play these games, my feelings would be quite different. But, for me, a pretty good port of Garegga for over $100 isn't that appealing when I can play an even more accurate version of the game for free.

I would actually say the PS1 has a more interesting shmup library, as it has ports of Raiden II and Raiden DX (two games that do not work in mame), and it has R-Type Delta, Einhander, and Gradius Gaiden, all exlusive to the system.

Don't get me wrong, its still a neat system, and I had fun collecting imports for it for a while. I just think it gets too much credit, it is definitely not "the shmup system ever", when its only two exlusives worth mentioning, Blast Wind and Steam Heart's, really aren't that great.

Just my opinion though, I find somethng to enjoy about all 3 systems. And, there are imports for all 3 systems that I still need to try, so who knows, maybe I will change my opinion on this once I do try them.

MAME doesn't really mean anything to me. I mess around with it sometimes, but I'd honestly rather play the actual arcade board or a quality console port than play in MAME.

Saturn doesn't go at the bottom no matter how you cut it anyway because we all know that the Jaguar actually goes at the bottom.

I'd rather play the actual arcade board too :D

There were some instances where I thought I was playing a quality port, because I didn't like using Mame, only to find out the port isn't all that great. I played the Saturn port of Dodonpachi for a year and never made it to stage 6, and then played it for a month in Mame and not only cleared the game, but looped it and made it to stage 2-2. If it wasn't for Mame's accuracy and the use of savestates to practice particular spots in the game, I would have never accomplished this.

I do understand that some people just do not like Mame (which sucks, because there are a lot of really ace arcade games that never got ported), and for them the Saturn is going to be much more important. For me though, their attempts to be as close to the arcade as possible, while still falling a bit short in most cases, just means that I have no use for those ports. I'd rather play Genesis/NES/Turbo ports, as they were actually different games, or ps2/360 ports, because they are chalk-full of bonus options, arrange modes, and are ports of games that don't work in Mame. Or the Dreamcast, which has shmups that I find harder to emulate the arcade versions of.

Again, just my opinion. I don't think any of the 3 systems deserves to be on the bottom, as they all have interesting aspects to them.

And yes, I forgot about the Jaguar, it would definitely sit at the bottom... or right above the 3DO, if that one is in this same generation.

I like a good shmup as much as any retro gamer, but I'm not really much of a huge shmup guy. I honestly wasn't really thinking of those when I was talking about the Saturn library.

The console was marred by being home to too many sequels. Many games were in their 64th iteration when they came out for it.

Wow, that's fantastic. I'd love to get one of those when the project is complete.
