Hello,
I was wondering if Genesis games have region lock out codes. Can I play a Genesis/Megadrive game from other regions on my American console?
Genesis games have region codes? Compatible?

Yes and no.
Early Genesis games werent locked. The later ones are.
the problem is the shape of the carts. JP carts are rounder and wont fit in a US genesis.
You could break off or saw off the console to make it fit JP games, But it comes out ugly. Unless you have a spare genesis that you dont care about; get a game genie or a Genesis 3.
The genesis 3 has a wider slot and supposedly can take JP carts. I have a genesis 3 but no Jp games to try this out.

They do have region lockouts that are not tied to the carts format. I used to have a JPN Mega Drive and while my Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 fit the slot, it didn't run.

MK3 might be a later game that came with the region lock out code. Since it's a newer game for the genesis. Perhaps MK1 or MK2 would have worked since they are older

Don't go breaking anything. You can modify the slot, but then the flaps aren't going to keep the dust out of the system.
A Genesis 3 will fit carts from other regions, but they are not optimal for various reasons. It is tight, but they'll fit. Better is to use a Game Genie as a pass through. Additionally some of the games with the lockout can be played by using Game Genie codes. Some of the later Konami carts are locked like Contra and Rocket Knight.
Also this isn't news. I'm moving it to the Sega section.

I know for a fact that Golden Axe isn't region-coded, I own a "Mega Drive" copy of it that I play on my American "Genesis."

The Game Genie can work around some of the lock outs, but you have to find the codes.

The Genesis 3 is incompatible with the Game Genie without a mod though.Hobie-wan wrote: A Genesis 3 will fit carts from other regions, but they are not optimal for various reasons.
