question about Genesis controllers

so I was reading about some differences in the genesis controllers from earlier and later versions. What exactly is the big difference between the controller with the Red text and the one with the White text. I guess the ones with red text came out originally with the fist consoles for sale.

There are actually at least 3 or 4 Genesis controller variations off the top of my head. Externally it is mostly the red versus plain and cord lengths, but internally there are different mechanisms for the D pad. Some just have a plastic pivot and at least one kind has a bearing instead. But as noted, the red ones were first. Those also have both grey and white for the Genesis logo where as the later ones with no red only have white printing.
