The Gold Classic Pack is FREE until 1/31/13. Starting 2/1/13 it'll be $2.50 to download. Get it now while it's free!!!

edit: The download pack has expired. Sorry, you missed it! But I suggest you buy it anyway. It's only $2.50 and it's a helluva lot of fun!

For those that don't know, there's a number of Coin Rush DLC available for purchase (more info at the bottom of this post). As a thank you for getting the world total coin count up to 300 billion, Nintendo put out the Gold Classic Pack for free!

- This retro-inspired pack pays homage to iconic Super Mario Bros.™ and Super Mario Bros. 3 courses from the NES™ era and has been injected with the coin-fueled fun of Coin Rush mode.
- Free Download between 11/27/2012 - 1/31/2013
- Starting 2/1/2013, it will be $2.50
I also read some where that it will only be available to download for a limited time, until the end of 2013 if I remember right. And if I remember correctly, I read that on Nintendo's site. But either way, grab it while it's free!!! I've been having a blast playing it, it's a lot of fun.

How to get the Coin Rush packs in NSMB2:

Obviously you need WiFi turned on and your 3DS connected to the internet, hopefully you knew that already. The part that isn't obvious is that you need to receive a SpotPass Notification before you can download any of the Coin Rush packs. They're not on the eShop, you purchase and download them directly from within the game.

You need SpotPass to be turned on. First, make sure SpotPass is turn on in the 3DS system settings. From the home screen, click on System Settings (the wrench icon). Then click on Internet Settings. Then click on SpotPass. Click on Automatic Software Downloads. Select Yes and click OK. Note that "Sending of System Information" does not need to be turned on. Click Back a number of times, then finally Close to return to the home screen.

Launch New Super Mario Bros. 2. When the game loads, on the title screen click on Options at the bottom. Make sure SpotPass is turned on and click OK. Now close the game and return to the home screen.

In order to receive the SpotPass notification, the 3DS has to be connected to the internet in sleep mode. So, make sure WiFi is on and you have an internet connection, then put the 3DS to sleep (just close it while on the home screen). It took me about 30 minutes to get it. When you have a new notification, there's a blue light that will blink (located on the hinge next to the WiFi indicator light). So once you see that blue light flashing, you got the notification.

Open your 3DS and click on the notifications icon (the green speech bubble in the top right of the bottom screen). Read the NSMB2 message. Now launch NSMB2 again. This time, when you go to Coin Rush mode, there will be a new button at the bottom "Shop." This is where you get the new coin rush packs from. They're all purchased (except for the free one) and downloaded from within the game. It does not launch the eShop. Purchases can be made with eShop balance, a credit card, or a Nintendo 3DS Prepaid Card.

Sorry, I'm a little confused by the thread title...
is this for the 3DS? (NSMB2 - I'm not seeing free DLC anywhere)

...or is this for New Super Mario Bros WiiU?

EDIT: 3DS. Like I thought. hmm, I must just be missing it... :?

Looks like until the end of January 2013.

Can you get this right from the e-shop or is it purchased from the game taking you there?

DLC for NSMB2 is accessed through the game directly, not the eShop.

You must have spotpass enabled for the game in order for the "store" to open up in the coin rush mode where you can buy (or download, in this freebie's case) the different DLC packs.

I love this particular DLC. My record is just under 25,000 coins for it, but I've been practicing and I'm pretty sure I can get it as high as 35,000. I'll get a million coins with it in no time. :p The super hard DLC packs are amazing too -- I hope Nintendo keeps pushing these out, because they are the most fun part of the game.

Yeah, I don't know why Nintendo had to make confusing game titles. NSMB on the DS, NSMB Wii on the Wii, NSMB 2 on the 3DS, NSMB Wii U on the Wii U.

Yeah, I figured I'd post this because it's easily missed.

Neither! It's actually a little confusion. Well, it was for me anyway. All the download packs for NSMB2 are paid for and downloaded from within the game. They're not on the eShop, and the game doesn't take you to the eShop.

Here's how you gotta do it. When you launch NSMB2, from the title screen choose Coin Rush. At the bottom you'll see a button called "Shop". BUT, it wont be there until you get a SpotPass notification about it! Why they made it this difficult, I don't know. In order to get the SpotPass notification, you need your 3DS to be connected to the internet and put it in sleep mode for a while. You also need to make sure you have the SpotPass option turned on in NSMB2 options and in the system options. The 3DS has a blue LED light on the hinge (by the WiFi light indicator) that will blink when a notification has arrived.

I'm gonna update the first post with this info. It took me a while to figure it out myself actually, so I'm sure it'll help most people.

Anyway, GO DOWNLOAD THE FREE PACK! It's a lot of fun!

I just beat the game, getting all star and moon coins, and have played coin rush a few times now and I'm only at 100,000 coins total. I wanna try to get to a million, but it's a little hard knowing I'm only a tenth of the way there LOL. Though I'm sure if I download all the Coin Rush packs, I'll get there soon enough.

But yeah, the coin rush packs are really fun. I don't usually like to buy DLC, but I'm gonna make an exception in this case. I want them ALL! LOL.

I pretty much ignored coin rush until I heard about the free DLC pack. I didn't think a timed mode in a Mario game would be much fun..but boy is it ever! I had just over 100,000 coins after beating the actual game, and after all the time I've been putting into coin rush (specifically this set of three levels) I now have 800,000. :)

This is the first time I've ever bought all the DLC for a game at full price, and probably the only time (other than Borderlands) that I've not only enjoyed the crap out of it, but keep coming back for one more try. The amount of secrets in these levels is just crazy, and optimizing the run for the most amount of coins is a lot more addictive than I thought it would be.

Same here, I didn't think Coin Rush mode was gonna be much fun. Maybe fun to check out for a minute then never play it again. But I was wrong. It can keep you playing the game long after you beat and complete the main game.

Spoiler if you don't wanna know what happens when you reach a million coins:
I read that when you reach a million coins you get a new title screen with a gold Mario statue. Not a huge reward, but I'm gonna go for it anyway. But I also read that if you max out the counter at 9,999,999 then you get a gold Raccoon Mario statue LOL. I don't know if I'll be going for that tho.

Yeah, I don't usually get DLC but I plan to buy all these packs. And yes, the amount of secrets in the levels is ridiculous. And it definitely has that "just one more time" aspect every time you finish a set of levels LOL.
