So I've started a small collection of Japanese Saturn games, now that I've got most of the Dreamcast games I want (excluding the expensive ones).
I only have a basic import player cart so far that does the job but sadly drops games to 50HZ, so some things go out of sync, so at some point I want to invest in a modded and/or Japanese Saturn (preferably the white one).
So far I have these:
Fighting Vipers (replaced my PAL version for PepsiMan =P)
Puyo Puyo 2
Puyo Puyo Sun
Gussun Oyoyo S
Clockwork Knight (both games on one disc)
Saturn Bomberman Fight!
Now I've heard all the praise the saturn gets for it's Japanese game library, but I've been looking through everything on segagagadomain.com, not to mention thousands of games on ebay, and I'm struggling to find anything that isn't shovelware. I'm talking all that anime and majong junk. The best games always seem to be stupidly expensive when you can even find them amongst the piles of rubbish.
Can anyone recommend some good import games that don't break the bank? I'm looking for games that I can play without needing to know Japanese and are under £20 ($40), if those even exist. One game I know I do eventually want to get is Sexy Parodius, but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.
Where are all the good Saturn Japanese Imports?

Re: Where are all the good Saturn Japanese Imports?
I'm in the same boat, I bought a saturn over a year ago with a bunch of games.
So i have a:
V-Saturn with
Fighting Vipers
Virtua Fighter 2
Vampire Hunter
Vampire Savior
Pocket Fighter
X-Men Children of the Atom
GunGriffon (some mecha game i guess)
Sakura Taisen 1 & 2
Evangelion Card library (i bought it 2 years before getting a saturn because i'm an eva fan)
Seems expansive but since i can't read japanese I've only really played the fighters. Trying to get into shooters but I haven't found a neat entrance into that genre yet.
I highly recommend the vampire games, especially the one with the 4meg expansion.

I have Vampire Chronicles for the Dreamcast though, which is essentially all of those in one, excluding story and such.
Another pair I'd like to get in on is the Cotton games.

Re: Where are all the good Saturn Japanese Imports?
Here's some i'd reccomend;
Anarchy in Nippon - Bizarre, but competant 3d fighting game
Assault Suit Leynos 2 - Awesome mech shooter, super difficult
Batsugun - One of the first manic/bullet-hell shooter and not as expensive as other saturn SHMUPS
Battle Garegga - My personal favourite SHMUP for the Saturn, really worth picking up imo
Cotton 2 & Boomerang - Both games are great and well worth owning, the gameplay mechanics are different enough to justify owning both despite Boomerang essentially being a remake of Cotton 2, however Boomerang can be quite expensive.
Detana Twinbee Yahho! Deluxe Pack - contains both Twinbee shooters, Detana Twinbee and Twinbee Yahho!, plus it's one of the cheaper shooters on the Saturn
Dungeons & Dragons Collection - contains both of the awesome D&D Capcom arcade beat 'em up's, Tower of Doom & Shadow over Mystara
Gokujyou Parodius-da Deluxe - contains both Gokujyou Parodius & Parodius-da
Nanatsu kaze no Shima Monogatari - aka Tales of the Seven Winds Islands, really nice adventure game from Enix with some beautiful 2d graphics - quite Japanese heavy, but there are video guides and walkthroughs out there
Princess Crown - beautiful 2d action-RPG, there is some Japanese text, but not too much and again walkthroughs are available
Soukyugurentai - amazing SHMUP that can be had for quite cheap
Tenchi wo Karau II - awesome Capcom beat 'em up featuring characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Thunderforce V & Thunderforce Gold Pack I & II - Thunderforce V is one of the best shooters on the Saturn and this version is superior to the PSX version, the two Gold Packs contain ThunderForce II & III and Thunderforce IV & Thunderforce AC, all 3 can usually be found relativey cheaply
Tryrush Deppy - great little 2d platformer, doesn't crop up too often but isn't all that expensive when it does
Wachenroder - awesome 3d strategy RPG, obviousley a walkthrough is needed, but it's worth it as Wachenroder is one of the Saturns best RPGs.

Re: Where are all the good Saturn Japanese Imports?
Anarchy in Nippon is really cheap, and I think i remember reading about it in Official Saturn Magazine once. Is there any videos of it about online? None of those shmups are what I'd call "cheap", many are upwards to £60-70, unfortunately. =E (Also RPG's are not my thing, just so you know.)
I'll look out for Tryrush Deppy though, looks pretty neat from what I've seen. It kind of looks like Saturn games are priced based on wherever or not they're 2D (i.e. the Saturn's strengths) or 3D (the Saturn's weakness).
One more quizzy: If I was to get a modded Saturn, would all my PAL games be playable in 60HZ or would I have to buy the import versions to get full speed? Ta.

Re: Where are all the good Saturn Japanese Imports?
Ugh, I've come to the conclusion that you have to be willing to pay over £25 to own ANY good Saturn games nowadays. I swear I can't win any for less than that on Ebay, I don't like paying that for games on ANY system, cheap arse as I am. I'm just glad i have a load of PAL ones from when they came out because I wouldn't buy them now at the daft prices they go for.

Some of the cheaper games I'd recommend are:
- Layer Section - about £15-20 depending on condition etc
- Strikers 1945 - around £10-15
- Sengoku Blaede - bit costlier at around £25-30
- Kaitei Daisensou / In the Hunt (this game only works on model 1 saturns; which are the oval button ones.) - around £10-20
- Sega Rally (best racing game ever with F355 on DC a close second!) - about £5
- Daytona USA (the original release "feels" better for me rather than the C.E.) - £5
- King of Fighters '97 (need a RAM cart for this one) - £10
- Dynamite Deka (die hard arcade scrolling beat-em-up) - £5-10
- Samurai Shodown IV / Samurai Spirits IV (need the RAM cart) - £10-15
