Game of the Month Overview Courtesy of ExedExes
Giga Wing was released in 1999 for Capcom's CPS-2 hardware, developed by Takumi and published by Capcom. It is a "verizontal" game, vertically scrolling with a horizontally-oriented arcade monitor. This month's games comes to us by Tyranix95.
The game takes place in a steampunk-like setting during a time of war. An unusual golden medallion, a source of great power, must be destroyed. There are 4 selectable planes available. The Raijin is piloted by Shinnosuke and has an adjustable 2-way side shot. The Carmine is piloted by Ruby and has concentrated forward fire. The Purchka is piloted by Isha and fires a long series of homing missiles, and the Wilderstand is piloted by Stuck and has 2-way floating mines. Each character has their own storyline and good and bad ending at the end of the game.
After shooting enemies, medals appear which add 1,5,10,20, or 100 points to a score multiplier which is used to multiply all points the player earns in the game. If a player dies, the medal value that the player has accumulated will be reset to 1. Power ups are available and 3 will fully maximize the player's fire, any more picked up after that add 100 to the multiplier. Force Bombs are also used and are different with each player.
Another weapon each player has is the Reflect Barrier (RB) which will deflect all enemy bullets for a period of time and any reflected bullets that strike enemies will turn into +1 point medals that will increase the multiplier. This weapon needs time to recharge after each use.
Giga Wing was also ported to the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. There are additional modes, a Score Attack, a character art gallery, and a 5th plane, the Stranger, which is the mini boss the player encounters at multiple points in the game, accessible with a 1cc or a cheat code.
Sequels include Giga Wing 2 that came out on Sega's NAOMI hardware in 2000 and was ported to the Dreamcast in 2001 in Japan and North America. Giga Wing Generations was released on the Taito Type X hardware in 2004 and was ported to the Playstation 2 in 2005 in Japan and Europe.
