Making a N64 Flash Cart?

Post by lamentofking »

I was wondering if there was a guide to making a N64 flash cart anywhere? I'm not into the whole soldering thing but I don't want to pay $200 for a flash cart. I'd be going into the B/S/T section of the forum requesting to buy one but I'm not allowed to unless I've been a member for 14 days.

So how hard is it to make a flash cart? With me having no soldering experience would I be better off trying to find a cheap flash cart?

I've never heard of someone making their own, but anything's possible. I'd guess it's kinda difficult, and would need an eeprom programmer that costs more than a flash cart.
The ED64Plus on Tototek is $99

I heard the ED64Plus was a clone of the original everdrive64 so wouldn't I be better getting the everdrive64v2? I'm just hesitate on spending more than a $100 on something that holds games from the late 90s. From what I understand the reason for the high prices on these carts is that they are expensive to make.

They are expensive because they are produced in low quantity. Modern day pirates, sorry, homebrew enthusiasts, have been spoiled by a marketplace of $6 flash carts for the Nintendo DS. The devaluing of those carts is part of what makes people feel that flashcarts in general are worthless items. They aren't -- it's all about the quantity in which they're produced.

$200 for an N64 flashcart vs. whatever you would spend collecting up the titles you want to play is a better deal no matter how you look at it anyway.

This...

It's a tough one, 200 bucks. But once you have it you won't regret it... ^^

Yeah I figured the N64 Flash cart was going to feel good to own once in my possession. Just buying it was the caveat.

Well anyway in accordance to the flash carts I was stuck between the ED64v2 and the 64drive. I used this thread at Assembler Games to see if I could learn which way to go but I couldn't make a definitive decision. This was 7 months ago though so is there any up-to-date pros and cons? I won't be doing any type of soldering or cutting so its ~$150-175 for the ed64 vs. $205 for the 64Drive. I guess at this point game speed and compatibility are the issue here. So the 64Drive is faster with loading times and has better compatibility than the ed64? I think that's what people were saying was going to happen but idk if it happened yet.
