Replacing SNES Game Battery

Post by PeNguinn97 »

Hello all,

I recently purchased a SNES console, as well as several other games. All of them work fine, except for Super Metroid. When I get past the opening scene, the console attempts to load the first level. Instead, Samus spawns in with 0 energy and instantly dies. I have researched this problem on the internet, and I believe that I have a bad battery.

I thought of returning the game to the seller because it cost me $38 and I am a soldering newbie. When I went to do this however, I noticed that the seller had said that the game was untested, and he did not accept returns.
I have no idea how I missed that, seeing as I could have had a verified copy for a few dollars more.
I am going to attempt to replace the battery. It looks fairly easy, so I think I can do it. I was just wondering what battery you guys would recommend. I figure that a lot of people will have had experience with this. :)

I would also like a recommendation on which bit to buy. I now I need the 3.8mm one, but $5 for something like that seems a little pricey. Could I get a set of bits for cheaper?

Thanks for any help!

Really you want to be using a tabbed battery so it is soldered in there properly. Don't cheese it and just tape one in there as it won't be as good a connection and will be more likely that just a little dampness and corrosion will make it lose contact, as could dropping the cart. The racket store sells bits. You can find tabbed batteries on ebay and whatnot, the size is CR2032. Or I could sell you one. Or I could replace your battery for you if you don't want to buy a bit and don't have a soldering iron and stuff.
