Re: PS1 Collecting - Hidden Gems
To those that want to make suggestions, games that made it to green label greatest hit status, had several sequels, or have a number of well loved arcade games are hard to call hidden gems.

Re: PS1 Collecting - Hidden Gems
Is total sales a criteria for ruling out a Hidden Gem? Maybe some of the green labels or sequels might constitute the gem staus since PS1 games are old and waiting to discovered by a new audience? A hidden gem could be anything deemed noteworthy such as a different style of game or the hidden unknown aspects such as the custom control feature I mentioned in the Arcade Collections or pre Duel Shock games.Hobie-wan wrote:To those that want to make suggestions, games that made it to green label greatest hit status, had several sequels, or have a number of well loved arcade games are hard to call hidden gems.
Another point is the green GH label is usually a lower count compared to the first run. Are there any games that have additional features not on the initial releases? I'm thinking new levels that appear such as some PS2 GH games.

Not to derail the thread any further, but is there a list somewhere of GH games that do this?CRTGAMER wrote:I'm thinking new levels that appear such as some PS2 GH games.

I would like to find PS1 Greatest Hits games that have additional content. I don't think there are any, but then again?

GH games might qualify as forgotten gems or something like that, but I don't think I'd call any of those "hidden".CRTGAMER wrote:Is total sales a criteria for ruling out a Hidden Gem? You have to be very careful about using game soundtracks on YouTube because content creators (like Sega) can very easily make you take it down and then you'll get a mark against your account. Especially in North America. I try to do it very sparingly because of that.CRTGAMER wrote:Another great video! Unlike a lot of Video reviews, you post video of gameplay with the all the original sounds and not dubbed in useless background music. This really helps in seeing how a game actually is thank you!
Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!

Re: PS1 Collecting - Hidden Gems
This is changing over time I think. If the games got an updated sequel or reboot, then people tend to remember it...AppleQueso wrote: GH games might qualify as forgotten gems or something like that, but I don't think I'd call any of those "hidden".
But if not, it's been like 15+ years since some of those games have been talked about. I'm looking at you Jet Moto series! A lot of younger collectors are going back and rediscovering the PS1 for the 1st time...and they often have no where to look beyond the really popular franchises.

For sure. When's the last time you've heard anyone talk about Vigilante 8? Fantastic car-combat game that stands shoulders-to-shoulders with Twisted Metal. It got a Greatest Hits release.Metal Jesus wrote:This is changing over time I think. Re: PS1 Collecting - Hidden Gems
Why do you think I mentioned the "forgotten gem" bit. Games that were popular in their heyday and sold well that nobody remembers now.
I guess to me a "hidden gem" should be something that flew under everyone's radar even when it was new.
It's all just semantic bs anyway though I guess.
