Optical mouse on Dreamcast?

Post by fredthezombie »

Anyone know how or if I could use a different mouse on my Dreamcast other than the official one? I just got one and the y axis is all messed up. I've seen adapters for ps2/keyboard/ and saturn controllers but not for a mouse.

Maybe the roller is just dirty or there's a lump of fluff inside interfering with the reading of the wheel.

I use that exact model, its a PS/2 adapter for both a Mouse and Keyboard which works just fine. It allows for optical mice as well as Trakballs, a lot better then the Dreamcast dust ball collecting mouse.

While I lamented that the Frogger 2 release didn't include an emulation of Frogger, this new Centipede does indeed offer the original version of Centipede. This will indeed offer far more enjoyment over the remake. In fact it makes me wish that there had been a trackball accessory released for the Dreamcast as it could have been hell-of-a-lot of fun to play this game again like on that cocktail cab.
What are you waiting for, buy one for the Trakball capability! Maybe it might work? :D

Dreamcast supported a mouse as well as a keyboard, which were useful when using the included web browser (fully functional), and also supported by certain games such as The Typing of the Dead, Quake 3, Phantasy Star Online and Railroad Tycoon 2. Other games such as REZ offered undocumented mouse support.
I'll have to see if that Centipede works in the original emulated Arcade mode.

Even though I think the other options are cool, I suggest attempting to clean the roller as well. You should be able to clean the ball/internals with a lint free cloth and rubbing the ball across your hands.

You can usually just take the ball out and use a fingernail to scratch the grime that accumulated on the rollers and that does the trick.

The Dreamcast, PS1, PS2 and SNES consoles all have 1st party mice, but a limited amount of games that work with them. I tested the Trakball on Dreamcast Centipede, unfortunately no luck. The game does not support the Mouse. Wiki mentions REZ working, but no luck either. Both games prompt missing Dreamcast Controller.

noise asked the possibility Mad Catz Panther in his Sega Thread which has a built in Trakball. This does not work either, both the PCX and Dreamcast Panther Trakball is proprietary and does not emulate a regular mouse. Only certain games that are coded for it works such as Kiss Psycho Circus. Ridiculous, especially the PC version does not have a simple direct Mouse cable.
