Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
Well you paid a remarkably cheap-ass price for it right? HDMI cables are all the same. You'll likely need one in the future, and you got one at a damn good price.
Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
I was going to post in the other topic about you buying a HDMI but I thought surely nobody is silly enough to buy a cable that the system doesn't even have a connector for...
I guess I was wrong. If you are plugging into a HDTV then surely you have a component connection which is perfectly fine. I really can't see the difference between HDMI and component (but all I have for comparison is a Viera which has a nice built in upscaler so I couldn't notice the difference even if there is one)
Component can do 1080p. So there really is no need for HDMI, since the HD-DVD format is defunct there is no need for any encryption.
Just stick the cable on ebay or keep it as a spare if you get any more hdmi equipment.

I didnt check the 360 to see if I could plug in the cable, I just thought they all could lol.Niode wrote:I was going to post in the other topic about you buying a HDMI but I thought surely nobody is silly enough to buy a cable that the system doesn't even have a connector for...
Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
^^^ yeah, calling you silly probably made him feel better. What is actually silly is that any wouldn't be compatible with hdmi.
Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
It just strikes me as common sense to actually check that something is compatible before buying something.
Let's face facts here. The 360 has absolutely no reason to need an HDMI port. Every single HDTV i've ever seen has a component in. The 360 outputs at 1080p over component. What exactly is the reason for requiring HDMI? IF it's about surround sound then that's bogus because the AV cable has SP/DIF optical so you can connect that straight into a decoder and listen to surround sound through that (which is the way you should be doing surround sound anyway, none of this virtual surround bullshit most TVs say they have).

Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
Ah well that's not too bad. You're better off saving those HDMI ports for things that actually need it (E.G., Blu-ray players that need the HDCP encryption to play the disc.). The 360 is perfectly fine over component. Trust me.

Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
I like it on the elite especially when watching HD-DVDs. But the damn HDCP pin fried on my HDMI port making it basically useless.
Yes component does output 1080p, but say you have a LCD 1080p television. The digital data on the HDMI will look far better then component because no transcoding will have to be done to display it on the digital only display. You may not notice much difference on a CRT display, but in most HDTV scenarios you will notice a difference between the two.
I use VGA now because of the damn issue with my HDMI port. The picture quality is still very nice, but not as good... you can tell when you view fine text on the display, its a little more blurry then with the HDMI cable. No real big difference, but I use DLP projection, so the process of transcoding kinda gets washed out slightly.

I see zero difference on a plasma Viera.

Re: no hdmi on launch 360?
I believe I've seen cables that offer HDMI but they are aftermarket and I'm not 100% sure they'd work for an launch system, probably just to replace your elite cables shoudl you lose them. Sucks cause I have HDMI on my tv but not my 360. When it dies (or I manage to sell it towards an upgrade) I will get an elite.
