Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I own all of the orange boxes and enjoy them quite a bit over the slimmed down experience. I would suggest sticking with the original episode layout

Huge fan here.

I'd definitely stay clear away from the orange boxes, not only is the cropping terrible (notice the commercial break eye catches have cutoff logo's), but the "remastering" is very bad. All that grain and sharp colors are completely lost. I'd say it's like... playing an N64 game via AV cables on an HDTV. Toddlers applied some photoshop effects or something, I'll say the same about Kai which I'm not a fan of at all. The pacing is literally too fast, the re-dub is pretty bad with some VA's being replaced and everyone else like Goku's VA is very old, so it's just not nearly as good (talking Japanese dub here). The new music was nothing special either.

Beyond fake Namek and the second form Cell junk, I'll never fret over the pacing issues of DBZ. The drama and build up for things just made it more tense and awesome to me, and I've seen tons of anime, to this day it's still the one I was able to get obsessed with and marathon faster than anything else out there, next to One Piece and just a few others. Everytime I got a Dragon Box (~40 episodes), I was done with it within a week.

[Buu Rant] not to mention Kai doesn't even cover the Majin/Buu stuff which is fantastic, ask anyone who's seen it all in Japanese and they'll probably say the same. Also I can't stress enough how essential it is to watch DB first, it is just literally half the series. See how Goku went on all these adventures and formed all these friendships, witness evil Tenshinan, Piccolo Daimao the first major evil villain, and the awesome final battle with Goku and Piccolo that cements their rivalry. Finally watching all of DB a few years ago just made me love the entire thing that much more. And then there's the Majin/Buu arc, which is great because I'd say the series really comes full circle, falls back on more of the jokes and silliness that made DB what it was. Love it or not, the entire package is amazing to me and although Freeza/Cell are infinitely better than Buu in my book, he was a fitting final boss to me. An evil blob that couldn't be reasoned with at all, so he just had to go.

If you have other releases just compare the two and the difference is insane. DB/Z were both originally 4:3, so they aren't widescreen anyways. The blue Dragon Ball sets are perfect though, but simply compare those to the orange bricks of DBZ and the difference is night and day.

I own all the Dragon Box's and am very proud to say so. Jumped on all of them as they released, definitely the ultimate and authentic DBZ experience for sure. The older single DVD releases of DBZ weren't cropped and look a lot better than the orange bricks, but between that and the OOP Dragon Box's, yeah your options are pretty thin so it's hard to say.

Well, then if you need any expensive operations in the future and are hard on cash, you'll be all set. Have you seen how ridiculous the 2nd box goes for currently? Crazy. I got the first box thinking I would eventually grab them all, and man, already the first box goes for more than twice what I paid. And these aren't even blu rays.

Thanks for the input Xeogred, but think ill just finish my Orange Box collection, as the Dragon Box's are pretty expensive and im not too picky about the cropping, or the remastering, i wish they would of just released one definitive collection instead of all the re-releases and confusing people all to hell.

Yeah, I know some longtime fans who have been around to see all of Funi's botched and nonstop re-releases of the series over the years, sounds pretty damn tiring haha. I lucked out with the Dragon Box's...

They were releasing the (non-Kai) original in BD as well (these I believe, straight up stupid to only put 17 episodes on there, boy they were hoping to milk that), which I was actually kind of interested in too, but they cancelled that line of releases last I hear. I'm sure they'll try again. It's Funi's milk tank for sure.

Speaking of if some of you didn't know, you guys ready for the new movie next year? Unlike some of the last few random and pointless "special/OVA's" they've done over the years, this one looks like the real deal and Toriyama was VERY involved. So as always, he does a lovely job retconning the crap out of GT (seriously don't even bother, do not let your interest overcome you on this one haha).

DBZ Movie 13 - Battle of the Gods

Looks great to me. None of the DBZ movies are that great, being non-canon and all, (I really dig Bojack and Fusion Reborn though), so yeah hopefully this one rocks though and is a fitting finale for the main series. Toriyama being heavily involved has me stoked.

Anyways, I completely loath the Orange Bricks, but if the video quality doesn't bother you than that's fine. I can confirm the translation/names is pretty much identical to the DBox subs. But yeah I watched the last ~40 episodes from the Orange Bricks releases awhile back before DBox 7 came out because I couldn't wait, and it was definitely hard to get over haha.

Seriously, haha. I've been tempted to buy a few more copies of the other sets just to hold onto them and see what happens.

Wouldnt it be 14?

Since This has 10-13 on it

Also this:

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (ドラゴンボールZ 神と神, Doragon Bōru Zetto: Kami to Kami; lit. "Dragon Ball Z: God and God") is the 14th Dragon Ball Z movie. It will premiere in Japanese theaters on March 30, 2013.[1] It is the first Dragon Ball movie in 17 years to have a theatrical release, the last being the tenth anniversary movie Dragon Ball: The Path to Power in 1996, which followed the first three Dragon Ball films and the thirteen Dragon Ball Z films.

Oh wow, I hadn't seen those before. I had planned on collecting the Orange Boxes, but I think I ended up only getting two of them.
