Ok not sure how the Racketboy community takes Dragon Ball Z, maybe it's too mainstream for some of you folks, or maybe its just something youve seen so much you dont care for it anymore, but i love it, and am trying to decide how to complete my Collection of DVD's/Blu-Rays.
Currently i have the Orange box seasons 5, 6, 8, and 9, ive been looking around on Amazon and see they have the Kai versions on Blu-ray but are only up to Season 3
Amazon link:
Dragon Ball Z Kai: Season Three [Blu-ray] (2012)
But i also seen they have the Dragon Box's, and the first 3 Dragon Box's are really expensive, after that they get down to $31, and obviously the consistency of Episodes on the Kai, Orange Box, and Dragon Box are not the same.
So im asking which should i bother finishing collecting, should i just get all the Orange Box's, or start with Kai the blu-ray cut-no-filler ones, not to sure about the Dragon Box's they just seem kind of pointless when the Orange box's are cheaper.
I dont care about cropped, or super high def, or original audio.
By the way, Amazon has 60% off all Dragon Ball Z box sets, but it ends tonight, so the Orange box's are only $14.49, and i get free 2 day shipping with Prime.

Dragon Ball has plenty of fans here.
If you don't care about the cropping and such, I'd just finish up the Orange Boxes personally. Besides, they match up with the DB and DBGT sets if you plan on getting those.

But with Kai, how bad is the filler-cutting, i mean will i be like wtf, ive never actually seen an episode of Kai.AppleQueso wrote:Dragon Ball has plenty of fans here.

I've never seen Kai either. I know it supposedly mostly removes stuff that wasn't in the manga to begin with though.Hazerd wrote:But with Kai, how bad is the filler-cutting, i mean will i be like wtf, ive never actually seen an episode of Kai.AppleQueso wrote:Dragon Ball has plenty of fans here.

Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Kai is only 98 episodes total, as opposed to DBZ's 291. And I think they are divided into 3 seasons. It removes the groups of filler/charging up mah lazer episodes and it's pretty much all action.
Also, it ends at the end of the Cell saga. No Buu saga.
I have them on my HTPC, but I havent watched them all so I'm not 100% on the editing/censoring on Kai.

Pretty sure there will be a 4th season of Kai re-released on Blu-ray, because it looks like Season 3 of kai only goes up to the end of the Android Saga.indecks wrote:Kai is only 98 episodes total, as opposed to DBZ's 291. There was the releases of Kai in parts of a season, and now they re-released Kai in just plain Seasons instead of parts of a Season (yup they are milking it), so far they have Season 1, 2 and 3.
Season 4 supposedly comes out in march, heres some box art.

Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
I'd call myself a decently big fan of Dragon Ball - I've seen every episode of every anime TV series (not including Kai) as well as having a decent chunk of the manga and some of the movies. I own the Dragon Box version of Z, which are pretty much definitive. The original series is far superior IMO, it doesn't pad things out to obscene levels like Z and really is a lot of fun.
The Dragon Box releases are great if you care about having something as close to the Japanese version as possible. Japanese titles, original previews, Japanese video master.
If you prefer the dubbed version and don't mind the cropping, it would make sense to just go for the rest of the orange packs. BUT IT'S REALLY YOUR CALL DUDE!

I watched Dragon Ball Kai when it was being broadcast in Japan. Personally, I freaking loved it. It was so fast paced and fun. I didn't miss anything that was cut.
I know that the DVDs have the correct aspect ratio, also, so you shouldn't worry about that. There's some censorship compared to the original version, but it's nothing too dramatic. People still bleed red blood, for instance.
The only thing that DBKai doesn't have is the Buu saga, which is a shame, but I think it is worth it.

Ended up getting the Orange Box version of Season 3 for now, going to order more after i watch it, going to end up finishing the Orange box 9 season collection it looks like, once all the Kai Seasons are released on Blu-ray ill consider those.

That would be what I'd do. But then, having the series on the shelf not match would drive me crazy.Hazerd wrote:Ended up getting the Orange Box version of Season 3 for now, going to order more after i watch it, going to end up finishing the Orange box 9 season collection it looks like, once all the Kai Seasons are released on Blu-ray ill consider those.
