What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
I spend more money feeding my animals than myself. All I eat is veggies, grains, and tofu for the most part though, so I eat dirt cheap. I eat a lot of bread and seitan, and make it myself, which saves a surprising amount too. $150ish a month on food for me for two people with the same diet.

Too bad that column hasn't been updated since early 2011. Looks interesting. Will have to check the rest of the website as well since I'm always looking for more ideas.Luke wrote:It's quite simple actually.

I have no idea how you guys spend so little money on food. Maybe I should stop eating 4000+ calories a day.

My meals average about $2 apiece, I think.

It has a lot more to do with not wasting food more than anything else. I try to use the last bit of everything I buy. For example, the really tiny celery ribs that most people throw away; I cross them, "lincoln log style" at the bottom of a baking dish and use them as a "rack" when roasting a whole chicken/turkey/hen. The celery soaks up the fat and adds a lot of flavor to the bird. And finely minced celery leaves add a bit of something special to any chicken salad.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I have no idea how you guys spend so little money on food.
Keeping frugal also has a lot to do with the proper hardware. I'm a chef, but an electronic rice cooker will almost always make better white and brown rice than I can. Same with a bread machine. And there is no better ground beef than the beef you grind yourself. I know it takes a few minutes, but any meat eater should definitely buy a chuck roast (ask for chuck end, double grind), grind it, and make a few burgers. It's cheaper, tastes a heck of a lot better, healthier, and you're not eating a mix of different cuts from different cows from different countries.
Now I'm hungry.

I have a bowl of cereal in the morning, a bowl of soup and crackers in the evening, and occasionally some chocolate animal crackers and tea for dessert. I've been on a bit of a diet lately, as you might notice.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I have no idea how you guys spend so little money on food. Maybe I should stop eating 4000+ calories a day.

Given the price you seem to pay for fruit I'm surprised you get scurvy or anything like that.

While I agree with Luke with regards to the rice cooker, bread machines are terrible. Better to get a stand mixer with a dough hook and do it yourself. The crust never turns out right when you're using a bread machine.Blu wrote:+1 Great post.
