super mario bros 4 would more likely be super mario world 2 (a true 2)
metroid 3 exsits. its called super metroid
legend of zelda strives to have as screwed up a time line as possible, so 3 would be out of the question.
and i dont know anything about mother / earthbound / whatever.
Legend of Zelda: LttP is Zelda 3 to the extent of my knowledge.
Super Mario World is Super Mario Bros. 4 is Japan so technically there is a Super Mario Bros. 4.

What are the tangles with the DKC franchise now that Rare is owned by Microsoft Game Studios? I always knew that Nintendo owned the characters but what about the gameplay mechanics etc, surely they are copyright Rare? Won't we see the same legal wrangling that doomed the Goldeneye port?

mate they came out on virtual console and gba. from what I understand they own all the games. and I have never heard of gameplay mechanics being owned by someone. then id should get payed money for every FPS that comes out

I assume your talking about Quantum of Solace. Which makes me think, did they ever make a Casino Royal game?

No, but they ARE making a Quantum game.

DKC4 would be sweet, I'd kill for that. How can you not like the DKC's, they're some of the best games to have graced the SNES.

Also, you can call it Super Mario Bros. 4, that would work ; )

Maybe Konami could also make a Castlevania 5, that would be great as well. But I wouldn't count on the DKC4, from all the crap I've heard about Rare.

Well y'know they were only $5 at the local game-gestapo when they were clearing them out... I figured that Jungle Beat would wear out a controller faster so why not have some extra~

Some of the games you are wanting could be made, but would need different numbers on them. As a couple Super NES games were those numbered sequels while in the development cycle. Some still have the numbers in some ways. I'll explain below.

Super Mario Brothers 4 = Super Mario World - When originally announced in gaming magazines, the game was called "Super Mario Brothers 4". I believe some early release Super Famicom carts of it actually say "Super Mario World: Super Mario Brothers 4"

Metroid 3 = Super Metroid - The intro sequence even says "Nintendo Presents...Metroid 3..." and for that matter, Metroid Fusion on GBA's intro sequence states that it is "Metroid 4"

Zelda III = The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - I still have the box my SNES came in from back in 1992, on the side is a picture of this game, labeled "The Legend of Zelda III: A Link to the Past"

So, further games in these series, but in the older style would be cool, but the GBA and DS have already delivered on some of these. The aforementioned Metroid 4 - Metroid Fusion, Super Mario Brothers 5 - New Super Mario Brothers, and The Legend of Zelda 9: The Minish Cap

They don't number them anymore really, but there are "understood" sequels at times even when there aren't numbers present. Like some movies for example:

Actual Number in series / Actual release title

Alien 1 / Alien
Alien 2 / Aliens
Alien 3 / Alien 3
Alien 4 / Alien Resurection

Die Hard 1 / Die Hard
Die Hard 2 / Die Hard 2: Die Harder
Die Hard 3 / Die Hard: With a Vengence
Die Hard 4 / Live Free or Die Hard

Many creators in the Movie and Gaming industry often seem to have a hard time numbering sequels past a Part 3, where they often opt for a subtitle to the main title for further sequels. I've never cared for it, as it makes it confusing to new fans what order things go in, but whatever, there's just the "understood" rule for some sequels.

Where it gets confusing is when they make side stories or "gaiden" games or movies that don't fit with the main series, but are considered outside the main story, but connected to it in some way. Or when they change their minds later to omit a title, and replace it with another. Both the movie Superman III, and the recent movie, Superman Returns are supposed to take place directly after Superman II. That is an example of retcon on a movie series, and changing the order after the fact. Take the Bubble Bobble game series, do you know there are about four different games claiming to be "Bubble Bobble 2", and true sequel to the original arcade hit? They are "Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bubble 2", Bubble Bobble 2 (NES), Bubble Symphony: Bubble Bobble 2 (Saturn), and I forget what the other one was, but you get the idea.

Sequels exist in many forms, but just remember that just because there isn't a number always present, doesn't mean it isn't an "understood" numbered entry. You can always ask here if you aren't sure. There are lots of knowledgable sources here to gain information from on various game related questions. One of the best I've found on the internet.
