I'm seeing The Hobbit tomorrow in HFR3D and then I'm off to watch The Life Of Pi.
I can't wait to see Les Mis.

These are still on my "to see" list also, but with a rugrat in tow for the next month or so I don't know that I'll get a chance. I am also hoping Hitchcock gets a wide release soon, but not too soon.

I'm in the middle of watching The Wedding Singer again, and I still can't figure out why a wedding band knows how to play "Love Stinks".

Just watched Berserk: Egg of the King

I was pretty pleased with this one, but I do wish they had chosen to animate things from outside the Golden Age arc. I liked the updated animation though it was always so fluid. The english cast is good. I liked that they brought back most of the actors from the TV dub. The dialogue has been cleaned up this time so it feels a bit more natural in the dub compared to before.

Looking forward to seeing the battle of Duldry in the next volume.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 5/5 - I love everything about this film. Great performances all round and there's such a rich and wonderful tone to every scene thanks to the warm cinematography and amazing soundtrack that I never seem to tire of it. Easily my favourite from the Coen brothers, and, like most of their films, it seems endlessly quotable, "no fighting in the Woolworth", "I'm a Dapper Dan man", "well, isn't this place a geographical oddity - two weeks from anywhere!", "Oh George, no, not the livestock", etc.

The Man With the Iron Fists - 3/5 - This was real fun, loved the obvious reverence for the Shaw Bros. style of kung-fu cinema, the appearances from the likes of Gordon Liu & Chen Kuan-Tai and many of the fight scenes. The weaponry on display was certainly ridiculous and over the top, and while the storyline was classic kung-fu affair, at times felt like it was just ticking boxes. A great sense of style though, helped in no small part by the soundtrack and classic kung-fu sound effects.

Star Trek - 2/5 - Third time I've watched this one now, and while it does some things I appreciate, in hindsight I can't see it as anything other than a mildly acceptable action sci-fi. I dislike the constant lens-flare, and the storyline is a bit of a mess. Also, I really don't like this version of Spock. I always saw Spock's conflict with his human nature manifesting itself by Spock denying that side of him, and his experiences on the Enterprise and friendship with Kirk being the catalyst that enabled him to accept himself as half-human, whereas here his conflict is much less internal, much less Vulcan. Hope the sequel's better, but I'm definitely going in expecting more action than sci-fi. Also, Nero is a horrible villain.

RoboCop - 4/5 - OK, this was a ton of fun. For some reason I totally missed out on RoboCop during my childhood and never saw fit to give it a chance until now. I was surprised at just how well some of the practical effects have held up (like the scene when Murphy removes the RoboCop helmet), while others (such as the scenes with ED-209 chasing RoboCop down the stairs) have aged very badly. Regardless, the film is gloriously over the top and features many of the hallmarks of Verhoevan's latter sci-fi films. I loved the commercials and the general 80's futuristic vision of Detroit, while the crazed villains portrayed by Kurtwood Smith & Ray Wise do a good job of justifying the extreme measures used by the OCP. Overall, this was just a very enjoyable 80's action film, and while I regret not watching it sooner, there were probably a few scenes that would have traumatised me as a kid, lol (like Emil's ruined face after crashing into a tanker of toxic waste).

Logan's Run - 3/5 - love the imaginative premise and 70's futuristic setting. Michael York is good in the lead role, but the story starts to unravel badly in the final third. Still, a fun and campy science-fiction film I found perfectly suited to a lazy Sunday.

Heathers - 3/5 - it's been years since I've seen this, but I very much enjoyed watching it again, even if it is now showing its age. The films brand of heavy-handed irony requires a fairly large suspension of disbelief, as Victoria (Winona Ryder) & J.D. (Christian Slater) attempt to improve their school through the murder of the insipid, spoilt upper echelons of high school society. The whole thing plays out like a lurid fantasy of teen disillusionment, replete with a black sense of wit and biting criticism about high school life, exaggerated here for effect, and the inept manner in which our society attempts to cope with teen angst and tragedy. But, while the dialogue is snappy and so very quotable, the breezy sense of style and sitcom caricature manner is, at times, almost too much, as the film treads a fine line between satire and farce. For the most part it succeeds, and while distinctly a product of the eighties, Heathers remains an entertaining and, above all, memorable black comedy.

Glad I'm not the only one that felt that way about the Star Trek film. There just wasn't enough sci-fi in it to feel like a Star Trek, it really felt like an action flick. And I completely agree with your assessment of the new Spock.

Robocop was a helluva movie! One of my all-time favorite action movies. The commericals/newscasts are hilarious. The special effects were amazing back in the day. And the dark atmosphere of the film is done so well.
