Yeah, I noticed that as well and lol'd quite a bit.

Anyway, to put in my 2 cents I'll say that I honestly don't know which I prefer. But I probably like FFXIII's combat better than both. Note I said probably, so even that isn't set in stone.
so is twighlight princess, and mario rpg not rpg's? so Im guessing twighlight princess is a rpg rip off, and is a fantasy 3d platformer, and mario rpg is a action rpg/rpg combo?

so zelda is a fantasy platformer?
Zelda is an action/adventure game. It was an influence on action rpgs, they took some inspiration of the gameplay mechanics of zelda and merged it with turn based rpgs to make the action rpg.

Mario RPG is more of a turn based rpg and not an action rpg

Yes, this is what I was saying.

garrett, I did not say Mario RPG wasn't an RPG, I said it was a turn based RPG. And to argue that Zelda was influenced by Final Fantasy in its inception is very incorrect.

Final Fantasy came out a year and a half after the first Zelda. Even Dragon Quest 1 (Which was the largest influence on Final Fantasy 1) came out after Zelda. But those games drew more on some western RPGs of the creator's youth than anything else.

I think the main reason people argue Zelda is an RPG is, frankly, the camera angle of the old games. It has the exact same view as any given jRPG of the time. But genres should not be determined based on camera angles. But, camera angles, setting, thematic elements don't determine a game's primary genre. It'd be silly to argue fantasy = rpg, though many people try to.

Calling Zelda any sort of platformer is also very strange considering you can't manually jump in them.

I dont think zelda is influenced by fantasy star,-if thats targeted torwards someone elsne ignore that.

I like zelda becuase I find turn base rpgs confusing...unless there simple, but most turn based have really large quests, and cut scenes like alot of the ps1 ones which ive never played.

Sorry, garrett123, I mis-read part of what you said.

Yeah, but again ... Zelda isn't an RPG :P

It certainly has the same flare, though. It could satisfy your appetite for an RPG, I think, and it does for some people. It has a lot of similarities in story structure and narrative and that sort of stuff and of course it's a big sprawling adventure. So, I could see preferring Zelda over Final Fantasy 7 or something.

You'd probably dig Alundra (also not an RPG). It's zelda-esque and awesome.

Turn base is where the genre of RPG began, Dragon Warrior and has the 2 biggest RPG franchises (Pokemon, and Final Fantasy, well mostly) so there goes my vote.

I feel i havent played a GOOD Action RPG since Secret of Mana, i didnt care for the any other game in the series, because once Legend of Mana came out, its like they changed art directors or something and it just wasnt the same for me.

Im not purely hating on the art, but i just didnt like it, the same goes Sword of Mana, when that was released i was super excited, but found nothing like the one i played back on SNES, i think the reason was the crafting system i feel by the time i beat the game i didnt really use it which made it pretty useless.

If i had an order of favorite Mana games that i actually played it would be:

Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana)
Sword of Mana
Legend of Mana
Seiken Densetsu 3
Children of Mana
Dawn of Mana (what a disaster)

While i hope they bring the series back for another installment, i hope they try not to over do it like the Final Fantasy series and stick to the roots.

I'm gonna butt in here and say Final Fantasy hasn't been turn based since III. It's time-based. I have no preference for turn-based or action-based game systems.

It all depends on how the game is designed. I like a battle that is interesting, challenging, and feels good, mechanically. The battle system is important but the enemies and dungeons that you fight through don't get enough credit. It's a huge deal, that's why Ys fans will tell you Oath is way better than Origin.

Lately I've been enjoying battle systems that are fully realized - that is, they're really good but you also have to master them before you can win the game. Lots of games have great battle systems, but you never have to think much about them. "different" enemies require a new weapon or spell, not a new strategy. Half the time doing things the boring way is more efficient anyway! Lunar, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy IX are prime offenders.

If I'm spending a few dozen hours on one game, there better be a lot to it! Games like Knights In The Nightmare, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy V, Star Ocean 3, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Oath In Felghana constantly ask more of you. I'm always considering more rules, making new character builds, and planning out battles up until the very last dungeon. That's how you make the most of an RPG.

I actually didnt think of the time base part until you mentioned it. In the end though the atb gauge fills up and that character/enemy takes its "turn". Oh and cant forget about Final Fantasy X. Strickly turn based
