X's actually pretty fun, even if the characters are dumb, the story is silly, and the designs are fucking wacked out.

Nomura used to be a lot more reserved with his designs. I mean the designs he did for FFVII, FFVIII, and Parasite Eve don't look bad at all.

I think he completely lost his mind around the time he started working on FFX though. I mean for crying out loud a character in FFX has A DRESS MADE OF BELTS. WHAT. It's like half of his designs are just outright self parody.

I don't get how people are cool with Eiko (Little girl vagina with a moogle popping out of it?), Amarant, and Quina, but have an issue with X and XIII.

Edea looked completely silly, Cait Sith was ridiculous, Irvine and Zell looked fine but were barely tolerable, Cloud/Sephiroth, Squall/Ulimecia, Zidane/Kuja, Tidus/Jecht... all ridiculous... its Final Fantasy, how are people still surprised by this?

At least every character in XIII has a reason to be there. In every FF from VI up, there are characters that join your party for no good reason at all, an add nothing to the story.

Jay from Jay and Silent Bob. That would probably be "Nooch", but it all sounds the same.

I think it's part of the "in my days things were better" mentality which us retro gamers suffer from (though I guess all humanity suffers from it).

Personally I'm more disgusted with another FF13 sequel. I actually enjoyed FF13, but 1 game was enough. It's world and characters were barely interesting enough for 1 game. 1 sequel, let alone 2, was overkill.

Quina is ridiculous, I'll give you that, but at least s/he oozes charm. Also, Eiko and Amarant come rather late in the story, so aren't so much of a distraction. They're certainly not my favorite characters, but they're also not difficult to ignore.

I never cared for VII or VIII, but I do fail to see how Zidane is ridiculous. He's more "normal" than any character since FFVI.

Which is why I rank VI below IV and V. ;)

The only Final Fantasy game I played as a kid was I and IV. I cannot say that they were better in my day because I didn't play them in my day.

Generational shifts are real, though. The quality may not change, but the character does, and that doesn't always sit well with folks. For me, I don't care for the overly cute, the overly developed chibi, or bishonen. IX certainly has some tendencies I don't care for, but overall it doesn't even come close to equaling later developments (or VII, for that matter).

Okay, I'll give you that Zidane isn't too abnormal, but Kuja? And yes, Quina is awesome, probably my favorite character in the game aside Vivi. Eiko and Amarant do join in late, but at that point your party is pretty small, to the point where there is only one character you could not be using. So, even though they were late additions, it didn't feel like the Yeti in VI, which came after a dozen other characters.

IV definitely avoids ridiculous and unnecessary characters, but it does follow a very strict path, to the point where you could consider it "on rails". I have no problem with this, but folks bring it up as a flaw in X and XIII.

But yeah, IV is pretty flawless, I have to give you that. As much as I am fine knocking all the FF games, I really enjoyed all of them, although for me VIII and XII were a little lacking.

I just don't know what people expect from a new Final Fantasy that brings them to such disappointment. To me, XIII feels so Final Fantasy-esk, way more than XII did.

No comment.

Agreed, it's a bit of a flaw. It's hard to compare, though. With IV, it's like you're in an ancient epic. With later games, it's a modern novel. So when a modern novel lacks the modern innovations that are negated by genre and contain unnecessary limitations, it feels as if something went wrong. If FFIV were remade into a PS3 game today, I'd be greatly disappointed if the world wasn't opened up a bit more.

Not a fan of the design, but I may still play the game. Despite not finishing XIII and not playing XIII-2, this new one seems like it could be pretty enjoyable.

Actually, the whole series is pretty enjoyable even if I heavily favor the SNES and PS1 games.

@o.pwuaioc: I suppose that makes sense. I never really felt that the world map really opened up an rpg though. It usually goes from you being stuck on a small continent, to finding a ride on a boat, to getting your own boat, and then to finally getting an airship. Its been done so many times that it doesn't really feel all that different to just have a straight path through the game.

I actually like the way FFIV and older stuff like Lunar progress. It feels like I am experiencing the game exactly the way the programmer wanted it.

If we didn't have Elder Scrolls, I might be more upset that the games aren't more open-ended, but to me that just isn't Final Fantasy. Thinking about it, the most opened-ended FF games, VIII and XII, ended up also being my least favorites
