Just from the title I was going to say that I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas ban any flag but the state flag. Then I read it and smiled, since they admitted that the flag has taken on racist connotations, no matter what the original intent was.

It's a school. Controversial political symbols have no place there.

It's a school. They aren't banning it from people's houses, or cars, or whatever else they want to put it on.

Cars possibly. If the student drives the car to school, and happens to have one on the car, they could get into trouble. I've seen it happen.

If we should drop things from school because they have offensive connotation, then I could really get so many things banned. Its a bullshit excuse to ban it. I understand that the specific school had issues with racism, but that doesn't mean they should block that symbol.

In many ways, the Confederate flag is becoming a punk/rebellious symbol similar to the overzealous use of the British flag by certain bands and such.

I'm sorry but I really can't bring myself to give a crap if a teenager gets in trouble at his high school for openly displaying a symbol with racist connotations (deserved or not).

Right, because I showed a little bity rebel flag on my car, that means I'm a racist, and should be put into the system as a white supremist.

Which is funny, considering this student was half black.

I'm also tired of all this, "its racist" bullshit. If that's a racist symbol because some racist use it, then so is the British flag, American flag, many African flags, the Mexican flag, Thor Hammers, shamrocks, Roman symbols, Greek Symbols, Anarchy signs, etc.... I want those banned too.

I can't understand anyone wanting to fly a flag associated with epic military failure and/or racism as a sign of rebeliousness unless they are an idiot or an asshole. There are much better "fuck the man" symbols that don't also connote white power.

That's similar to arguing that "Remember the Alamo!" is a pointless cry. It works because the people using it want it to work that way. It gives them hope, or pushes them to work, or whatever.

In this case, I think its a way of saying, "Oh, you won because you were more industrialized and had more resources? I don't care, I still want you to FUCK OFF."
