no way prof, emulation is cheating.
Perfect emulation is like going to Princeton instead of Harvard

Playing on a PS1 is like going to UMass instead of Princeton

Playing on a Saturn is like going to The University of Phoenix

and MAME is "perfect emulation"? Given the amount of variables from MAME build, ROM versions and the hardware you're running it on I'd say MAME is like reading a Harvard course syllabus and saying that you took the class.

As I understand it the MAME port of DoDonPachi is highly regarded and generally considered to be a pretty damn-near perfect match to the PCB.

I don't know. I haven't played either. But I know Mike has the PCB and played MAME. We should ask him.

But I"m curious your disdain of the Saturn port... having not played it.

I've yet to discover a PCB with a pause button.

What makes you think I haven't played it?

There's nothing near perfect to the PCB, that's why it sells for $600.

There is a reason i'm playing SAT over PCB. SAT, like MAME, if something happens (kid falls, etc) I can pause and come back. Also, on MAME/SAT, I can reset, which is something done often on this game.

For both of those reasons, an arcade run is more impressive than any MAME or Console run.

have you? If you mentioned you had, I missed it. But I figured you had not since you referenced others' articles when discussing differences from PS1 & Sat in the article.

Anyway, Dunpeal had said pretty emphatically that after playing PCB, PS1 and Sat that the Sat port was closest to arcade in scoring. And Mike's mention that he could get higher scores on PCB/Sat than PS1 seemed to back that up.

The only "drawback" of the Saturn port that seems concrete is "pixelated explosions" which is pretty far from game-breaking.

I have played Saturn DDP (iso), but only a few times before picking up the PS1 version which just seemed to "feel" closer to the MAME build for me. I haven't touched the ISO since picking up the PS1 port.

iirc both the Saturn and PS1 port have speed problems (slowdown non existent or in the wrong parts, too fast in many portions, scoring off, etc.). I agree that few MAME ports are 100% perfect, but DDP - from what I remember reading - is pretty close and one of the better emulated shmups of the past 15 years or so. There's no doubt it is the best non-PCB way to play the game if you are shooting for "closet to arcade" experience.
