I don't and won't Mame and I'm sure there are others. I wouldn't mind participating but I owned exactly 0 of the games that made the list last year. Based on the few nominations I've seen so far it looks like I'll own maybe 1, if I'm lucky. You guys want more people to participate you're going to need to come up with SHMUP's that the common and poor/frugal retro gamer like myself actually owns. However, maybe you don't want more people, in which case continue the way you are and have fun with it.

This is the point of making the list early. You have plenty of time to save and acquire the games we'll be playing. Worst case scenario, a game or two will run $120, but even that is rare. Also, you can always get your money back by reselling it after your done...if you didn't like it.

Value of last year's games:
Truxton - $5-10
Axelay - $10-15
Dragon Blaze - $50-80 (or much cheaper if you PAL swap it)
Zanac X Zanac - $90-110
Dimahoo - $150 board, or MAME (free)
Metal Black - $5 PS2, $40 SAT
Radiant Silvergun - $110-140
X-Multiply - $50-80
Exed Exes - $5
Mars Matrix - $25-35
DoDonPachi - $45-65

That puts more than half at $50 or less.I

Stop buying 10 crappy DS games and buy one decent shmup. If you don't like the game, sell it for what you paid for it.

I agree with you, MAME is Lame, but that shouldn't keep anyone from participating.

Somehow it got construed that i was against Mame. I'm not, just not something I can do. Others don't like it.

I'm also not saying every month needs to be a cheap or common SHMUP. One or two a year would be great and if not that's fine as well.

Your suggestion would require having the system that can play the game. Personally, I dont own a 360, PS3, or a Saturn. I also don't have a Japanese enabled PS2 and just recently found a SNES.

Well, your missing the most important consoles to play shmups.

No consoles.

No MAME.

No Game.

But I also agree that MAME sucks.

It's usually a hell of a lot better and easier than playing console ports. Many console shmups are imports and require non North American consoles or swap discs, mod chips, etc. I really don't see how MAME is any more technically complicated than getting an ISO of a Japanese import to play or somethng.

can only tell you from my own experience. I've spent far FAR less time getting legit imports to run on consoles than configuring MAME to work correctly from one ROM to the next.

yeah I'd say that if you don't wanna MAME -- and that's fine -- then having a Dreamcast, PS2 and Saturn (all of which with a way to play imports) is kind of a must. Having a 360 helps too. But if you have those 3 then you should have a pretty wide variety for shmupping.

That's an encouraging post for a club that per prior posts would like more people to participate. I'll just leave this little corner of the forums now. Have a nice day!

me?

I'm confused man. All I was saying is that if you want to play shmups you should probably own consoles that have shmup libraries. GameCube for instance has what? Five shmups total? And three of those are imports. That's not a lot to pick from. So was just saying if you're interested in getting into more shmups without MAME then PS2, Sat and DC are the consoles to go with.

You want a shmup club that eliminates 90% of the best shmups?

Create a SNES shmup of the month club then. I'll participate.

As for this - it's silly to think we should narrow down shmups to your specific haves.

-No MAME
-No PCB
-No DC-J
-No SAT-J
-No PCE
-No PS2-J
-No 360
-No expensive games

Am I missing any of the rules. It sounds pretty fun so far.

Hey, thanks for the positive feedback.

Yeah, when I was picking my list, and checking it twice, my initial thoughts were:

Deathsmiles, Ibara, Ketsui,

And then,

Aero Fighters, Strikers 1945, Sky Shark.

But, after that, I remembered all the guys that showed at the start of the year and nominated and voted on all these great shmups for the club and then never posted a score for the rest of the year. So, with that in mind: I just picked the games that I wanted to hangout and play with the gang.

dunpeal2064 wrote:Ill pm you my choices right now. I'll post them here as well for everyone to ponder over:

Thunder Dragon 2/Big Bang
Rapid Hero
Gunnail

All NMK goodness. I left out Zed Blade because I think its their most well-known shooter, and even though its awesome I think these push to my top 3 by them.

Exed should be happy to hear that these are not bullet hell shooters!

Awesome choice of games, dunpeal! I vote for Rapid Hero (slight nod over gunnail).
