GOG is my favorite digital retailer, by far. The DRM-Free issue is really important to me because I want to be able to backup my games onto an external drive and be able to play them whenever.

Steam games are tied to your user account. If that account is ever closed for whatever reason (Steam goes out of business, account appears hacked, you refuse to agree with new subscriber agreement), then *poof* your games are unplayable. If you're willing to allow that risk, Steam is popular, easy to use, has great sales, and your games automatically update (GOG informs you of updates, but you decide whether to install them or not). Steam and I are in a fight though, and I haven't bought a game directly from them in months.

DotEMU is another store worth mentioning. Their games are also DRM-Free. Their store front doesn't work as well as GOG and they don't have many games that aren't already on GOG, but they do have the IREM hits collection, which nobody else seems to carry, so they're good for that.

As mentioned earlier, GamersGate is a pretty good site. It's chaotic because they seem to be willing to release any game whatsoever, regardless of quality. Their selection is immense and they regularly have tons of games on sale (though many of poor quality). They do let you know which games are DRM-Free, but you have to interrupt the installer to be able to copy the setup files to your backup. It's weird.

Desura is another nice service. They focus on indie titles. The majority of their games are DRM free, but it's not intuitively obvious how to back up the games, given how their client works.

Indievania is another DRM-Free site. The site is run on donations, and it shows: Their storefront sucks. But I love them because 100% of your payment goes to developers. They have a host of indie titles that are almost all DRM-Free.

Trine - A beautiful puzzle/platformer where you switch between different characters, somewhat reminiscent of Lost Vikings.

Dungeons - Decent strategy title, spin-off from the Dungeon Keeper series.

Darkspore - Futuristic sci-fi action-RPG. Loosely related to the games of the Spore series. A fair bit of warning: there is DRM that requires a constant internet connection.

Brave Soul - A eroge Diablo-clone JRPG. Definitely an acquired taste, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Torchlight - Another great Diablo-clone.

Dungeons & Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection - Absolutely essential! Contains six games and expansion packs. Unfortunately, this seems to have gone out-of-print rather quickly (at least according to Amazon).

Any of the Neverwinter Nights collections - more D&D goodness.

Hinterland: Orc Lords - A cheap and fun strategy, RPG, and town-building game.

Disciples II: Dark Prophecy & Disciples III: Renaissance - Pretty fun turn-based strategy games. II is a bit better than III in my opinion. The 3rd one also required a lot of patches to get it up and running, as I recall.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - One of the most engrossing WRPGs I've ever played.
I grabbed Trine yesterday. It's been very enjoyable. It's the sort of game that speaks to my console gaming roots, an old fashioned 2D platformer. I would have got the second one too, but it seems I can't get that on GOG. I may just go ahead and get it on Steam at some point, but I'm getting quite partial to GOG.

I picked up The Witcher: Enhanced Edition today as well, so I have both the first and second game now. As a fan of some of Bioware's rpgs, I think I'll probably enjoy the Witcher games, which reminds me. I need to get Dragon Age on PC at some point. On console, the game always felt incomplete to me and I never finished it as a result.

Yeah, the DRM-free thing appeals to me. I like the idea of being able to back up things and really, truly OWNING what I buy. I got some more games off them today. I got Deus EX Game of the Year edition, Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams (beat 'em ups and platformers are instant buys for me, especially in 2D), Anachronox, and the aforementioned The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Dragon Age is definitely a PC-centric game. It was originally supposed to be a "return to form" after several console-first RPGs (KoTOR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect).

If I recall, the PC version is the only one that lets you zoom out to the point that it's like the older isometric ones (or NWN games), and the difficulty is a notch higher by default due to that.

You'd get a much better and larger selection of great PC exclusive games if you would go for games released between 1992-2002 rather than 2002-2012. Even 1997-2001 alone would yield much greater results.

Well here's a few noteworthy games
RPG:
Vampire The Masquarade: Bloodlines
The Temple of Elemental Evil (RPG/turn based tactics)
Heroes of Might and Magic V (RPG/turn based strategy)
The Witcher
Neverwinter Nights 2

FPS:
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R series (A mix of RPG, FPS, survival simulation and horror, similiar to Fallout 3/New Vegas in some ways, shares the post apocalyptic theme)
Battlefield 2
Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45+Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad

Pretty much all of the FPS games by Valve, including Portal, have been ported to consoles by now but Counter Strike: Source and Day of Defeat: Source are still PC exclusives. CS:S>CS:GO

Adventure:
A Vampyre Story
I'd recommend the new Sam and Max games but they've been ported to the Wii. If you decide to get into old(er) PC games later on, remember to try out the original Sam and Max Hit the Road :)

Horror:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Penumbra-series
If you can get over the fact there there was an Xbox port, I've heard that Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth is a very good horror game. I personally haven't tried it yet so I don't know if it's true or not.

RTS+Strategy:
Heroes of Newerth
DOTA 2
Europa Universalis III
Starcraft 2
Rome: Total war
Hearts of Iron 2/3
Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne (you'll need the original game from 2002 to play it though)
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Come to think of it, I don't know why I said last ten years or so. I guess just because I haven't been able to play anything in that time period as my computer was so old. I'm open to any good games from any time period. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm definitely thinking about picking up Starcaft 2.

I got a new 27 inch monitor today and a logitech controller with some of my holiday bonus money. Seeing as I got a new PC, might as well have a new monitor to go with it. So I'm set for some gaming. I also picked up Borderlands 2 for PC, just because people have been raving about it so much, including dsheinem. It was kind of an impulse buy. I saw it on the shelf and said, "what the hell, why not?"

Anyone know a place where I can get the No One Lives Forever games at a reasonable price? Can they be downloaded from any place, or do I need to get physical copies off of a place like ebay?

If you dont mind older games then here's a few suggestions, all absolute classics, yet none of these games are so old that they're hard to tolerate/outdated, hard to get into nor really demanding&hard. I wont burden you by including too many games, but here's a few of the best PC games of all time.

Planescape: Torment (1999): Largely considered to be the RPG with the best writing/dialogue/story of all time. It's one of a kind with a very intresting world and characters but a combat system that is quite boring and visuals that aren't all that great. On top of that you spend most of the time talking to people, I guess it depends on you whether that's a bad or good thing.
In order to enjoy this game you need to be able to tolerate a slower gameplay pace and the fact that you'll be reading a lot of text. But it's like reading a good book, once you start to make progress the story just captivates you, and my what a story it is. It's easily the most "intellectually engaging" game I've ever played, not because the gameplay is very strategic, but because of the amount of intresting dialogue in this game. Some people have said that this game is kind of like a WRPG and JRPG hybrid and I can see where they're coming from. I guess this game doesn't sound all that exiting before you play it, but belive me it's worth all the hype it gets. To me this game is like Persona 4 (captivating storyline, awesome characters) with a much more unique and intresting setting and a lot more "deep"&philosophical writing. Persona 4 itself is already one my favorite RPGs of all time so that should say something about the quality of this game...
Gameplay video. Not very representative of the game as a whole mind you, but it gives you a some kind of picture what the combat's like.

The Curse of Monkey Island (1997): Third game in the legendary Monkey Island-series. While games 1&2 are the true classics, the third game has awesome cartoony graphics that are just beautiful to look at and the gameplay was simplified from the first two games. It's a comedic point and click adventure game with good voice acting and memorable and really funny writing. I'd say that this is probably the best way to get into the genre, it's just so easy to get into this game and start playing it. Just and all around a very pleasant and positive gameplay experience imo.
Gameplay video

System Shock 2 (1999):
While the original System Shock is the true innovator, it's quite complicated and hard to get into compared to the second game, which is easily one of the best FPS games of all time. The System Shock series pioneered the FPS/RPG genre and the games have a very large influence on the FPS genre. Bioshock is basically System Shock 2 lite, not nearly as good as SS2 though. It has an amazing storyline for a FPS game, really awesome athmosphere and it's a great and very well executed mix of RPG, horror and FPS. One of the scariest games I've played despite the poorly aged graphics, all thanks to excellent voice acting and soundtrack.
Gameplay video

Thief II: The Metal Age (2000):
You probably already read about this game on the stealth game thread so I'll just say that this game is considered by many to be the best stealth game of all time. Stealth gameplay done right (getting caught isn't an instant game over, unlinear sprawling maps and multiple ways to solve problems etc), a strong athmosphere, a very intresting gameworld and a plot that is quite intresting.
The first game, Thief the Dark project (Thief 1) is more combat oriented and has less refined gameplay but a more supernatural and intresting levels and plot.
Gameplay video

Deus Ex (2000):
This game is a mix of Thief, System Shock and Half Life and it has a very strong fanbase of people who think that it's the best game of all time. Just like the System Shock games, this game has an absolutely amazing plot for a FPS game and it has some of the best (and most philosophical) writing you'll ever see in a video game.
Gameplay video

UFO: Enemy Unknown (1994):
Another one of those "many people think it's the best game in it's genre" type of games. It's an addictive strategy/turn-based tactics game with an alien invasion theme, if you've played the new X-COM on PS3/Xbox 360 you'll have a pretty good picture of what this game is like.
Gameplay video

Baldur's Gate 2 (2000) and Fallout 2 (1998). Usually when talking about PC or WRPGs, these are two games that are tied on the number one spot. They're the PC equivalent of Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger on the SNES (while Planescape: Torment is kind of like Earthbound in the way how it breaks many RPG conventions). Ultima VII (1992) is another strong contender but it's harder to get into than these two games.

If you like Half-Life 2, then Half-Life(1998) is definitely worth a playthrough. And if you haven't played Half-Life 2, definitely check it out (and don't forget Portal while you're at it, if you haven't played that one yet). Although I guess you can play HL2 and Portal on consoles.

Far as I've seen they are not available digitally yet, but used copies are not expensive on Amazon.
