Vertical monitors are literally just horizontal monitors turned on their side.korn16ftl3 wrote:what determines the orientation of the picture? i have played PS1 and NES and such on the newer TV's i dont see too much of a difference.....and tracking down a tube seems like it would be such a pain in the ass from what i have been reading.AppleQueso wrote:a newer TV probably wouldn't be very happy with the signal that the arcade board outputs

so why would replacing a CRT with an LCD make the picture be horizontal instead of vertical?AppleQueso wrote:Vertical monitors are literally just horizontal monitors turned on their side.korn16ftl3 wrote:what determines the orientation of the picture? i have played PS1 and NES and such on the newer TV's i dont see too much of a difference.....and tracking down a tube seems like it would be such a pain in the ass from what i have been reading.AppleQueso wrote:a newer TV probably wouldn't be very happy with the signal that the arcade board outputs

You'll just have to make sure the LCD is rotated too.korn16ftl3 wrote: so why would replacing a CRT with an LCD make the picture be horizontal instead of vertical?
But yeah modern TVs often don't play nice with low res signals over things like vga inputs.

not liking the costs of an actual arcade monitor......they are all well over $150.....hmmm if im gonna put this kind of money into the cab....then i need to put something worth it in there because this is just crazy to play one game thats older than me and holds zero market value over the price of the tube/monitorAppleQueso wrote:You'll just have to make sure the LCD is rotated too.korn16ftl3 wrote: so why would replacing a CRT with an LCD make the picture be horizontal instead of vertical?

Do a cap kit before you go buying a whole new monitor.
A cap kit should only run you about 6 bucks.
(just make sure you get the right one for the monitor chassis you have)
You'll have to discharge the monitor.
Follow this video's instructions:

that wont fix the annoying burn ins tho.....some one flipped the monitor and the burn ins for the score is on the bottom and such....i suppose if i flip it back around so the burn ins match it would not be such a big deal....at least less noticeable....worth a shot over the cost of some of the monitors i supposeEllertMichael wrote:Do a cap kit before you go buying a whole new monitor.

ya im not scared i did my own 360 JTAG and various other projects worst case i mess it up LOL but i mean its not like im going to mess any thing up worse than it already is.....my problem seems to be desoldering most of the time....the desoldering braid and solder suckers just dont seem to work well for me...but i find the older the circuitry the easier it is to work on as well due to the solder points being significantly largerMajors wrote:Korn -> Are you comfortable with soldiering?EllertMichael wrote:Do a cap kit before you go buying a whole new monitor.

i can try but the screen is such a faint color its ridiculous lol and i have messed with every adjustment on the tube none of them seem to bring any actual color back to the game....no matter what i seem to get a faint white image of what supposed to be there so a picture may not take very wellCan we get screenshots of the image displayed?

Then a capkit would be no prob, it's just tedious.korn16ftl3 wrote: ya im not scared i did my own 360 JTAG
I'm no Randy Fromm on CRT's so I sometimes just shotgun a chassis (replace a bunch of caps) in hopes that it will magically fix an issue. This is looked down on by the "real" electronic repair folks, but 'eh...it's my cab. There is also the Flyback and HOT (high output transistor) that you may have read about, that is also a common replacement. As for the dim output in your case, I do not have a definitive answer BUT if you do decide to attempt a repair, keep in mind burn-in and size of the CRT...no use putting time into something that you don't want.korn16ftl3 wrote: i can try but the screen is such a faint color its ridiculous lol and i have messed with every adjustment on the tube none of them seem to bring any actual color back to the game
If your going to MAME it, a LCD would make hooking up the video a lot easier since you would not need to upscale or convert the signal.
PS: Silly question, but you have cleaned the monitor screen? I have seen some dirty monitors that had so much dust and soot, it made the image dark.

Excellent point. JMustang's R-Type cab he picked up had a ton of buildup on the screen when we were giving it a light tweak.Majors wrote: PS: Silly question, but you have cleaned the monitor screen? I have seen some dirty monitors that had so much dust and soot, it made the image dark.
