Weird issue with video out on Sony PVM

Post by Clammy »

I recently picked up a Sony PVM-20M2MDU, and I really love it. The picture quality is amazing, and it also doubles as a nice table.

The problem I'm having though is that I get some weird video issues when I plug a cord into the s-video out. I occasionally record game footage for various reasons, but whenever I try to record from s-video the video quality gets all fuzzy and distorts, with lots of purple for some reason. I can't test if it does this with other video outs as I don't have a capture card capable of such.

Would anyone know why this is happening, or maybe a fix for it? It's not a HUGE issue, but it's a bit of a problem when I want to capture any footage. I tried looking through the menu options to see if there was any possible fix, but there don't really seem to be too many options.

Here are some examples.

IIRC, there should be a switch on the back that goes between 75 Ohm and Hi-Z. Try flipping that when you're passing video through the monitor.

I think that should fix your problem.

I'm not seeing any type of switch.

To be clear, the PVM display distorts when you plug in a s-vid to the output on the back? Or are you saying the recording output is distorted? Does it make a difference if the s-vid going out from the monitor is plugged in or not to a VCR/capture card?

I have not used my pass-thrus on my PVM's, but I did have a older 13" CRT from a Sega kiosk that had composite in and out. I noticed that when I connected another monitor to the out (duplicating the display), the image would darken. I figured it was cheap CRT and what spliting the signal which would lower the signal.

Whenever the cord gets plugged into the s-video out on the PVM, the picture gets all weird. The footage being captured to my PC looks absolutely fine, it's just the picture on the PVM itself, and it only happens when I plug the cord in.

I just tried plugging the cord into the s-video out while it was unplugged from the capture card, and I still get the same result, messed up picture. It's very odd, and I can't really understand what is causing it.

No change when you wiggle the s-vid? Is your souce input also s-vid? Try other cables? Not an expert on PVMs and I cannot recall seeing an distored image as you have shown, sorry. Seems to be an issue with the s-vid output. At least it's not a deal breaker.

I thought about trying a different s-video cable, but I don't have any spares on-hand. The one I have now was just a cheap $1 one I grabbed from ebay some time back, this is the first time I'm really using it.

If it's a cheapy cable that might be your problem.
