Best Controller for N64 Emulation that isn't..

Post by fuctfuct »

an N64 Controller?

I just played through Ocarina of Time with a Dual Shock. Works well enough but the right analog for c buttons can get pretty fucking annoying. I loath the stock N64 controller. So, wondering if anyone has any ideas before i start Majora's Mask.

Those Hori pads are pretty rare and expensive no? I've wanted one for a while but i could never justify it.

The first one i have wanted to try for a while. But, honestly it just looks like it would handle like an official controller with slightly modified spacing. I have seen them modified with gamecube analog sticks. Kinda neat. Never seen one (Mako or Superpad 64) "in the wild". Though, I have tried to get one though the forums a couple times over the years. They are pretty pricey on eBay (over $30 shipped) for what they are :(

If someone is in Japan, the Hori Minipads are not to expensive. I have five of them because I got them for $30ish a pop with shipping (since we still play N64 games a fair amount in my house). Ive found that the Gamecube controller works pretty well for N64 games if you dont mind having to change control schemes every once and a while, or having the Cbuttons spreadout a bit - I used X,Y,Z, and the cstick as C-left, C-right, C-down, and C-up, respectively. Its kind of awkward at first, but soon you will realize that you dont use C-up as often as the others in most games.

I use a xbox 360 controller with c buttons assigned to right analogue, i actually find it easier to play zelda games that way because most of the songs end up being half circle movements that i can pull off in a split second.

Don't know anyone in Japan at the moment :(. Your method would get pretty annoying for the games i play hehe. I mostly play perfect dark (alot) and both zelda games (once a year or so) :)

My main gripes with using the analog in zelda are ..

1. Its very easy to think your pressing UP but depending on how your holding the controller at the time you could be pressing LEFT or RIGHT ever so slightly. You do the wrong action. Only seems to happen at the worst times lol.

2. Example... press left for the hook shot + let go to release hookshot + stick flicks back to "centre" + stick goes to far and triggers right = pull out your bow instead and get hit by an enemy lol. Again ONLY seems to happen at the worst times lol.

I tried it out on my wii with the virtual console version of Ocarina of Time. Works but it still does number one above. 2 not so much.

For Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, I do the Cbuttons as the right stick and A/B being A/B. But for games like Mario, Space Station Silicon Valley, Mario Kart, and BattleTanks, the setup works really well.

I have horrible luck with that sort of thing on this forum. Usually ends up with a thread in the BST asking for something specific and a lot of bumping the crap out of it until i give up for a few months and try again... then give up... then try again hehe.

Eg.. I must have looked for that super pad 64 three or four times since i joined. Tried at least four times to find a VA4 Model 2 genesis.. so on.

Might try for a Hori N64 Pad after X-Mass :)
