Here is an animated .gif from the early 90's children's spooky-mystery show, Ghostwriter. The exact monster on the right haunted my nightmares for weeks on end after seeing this episode on tv one morning (he actually may have been part of a 2-parter episode... I'm not sure).
This is the first image of him I've seen since having those childhood nightmares. I'm not scared of him now, but I'd love to figure out his name or what exact episode he was from.
Any takers?

I knew it was a multi-parter episode, that must've been why he was in my nightmares for so long.
After some googling, it seems like a lot of people online have strong memories of this arc - even if they don't remember any other episodes. Mostly because they got nightmares too!
