N64-Gamecube

Post by Suraido »

I was given loan of a N64 a few days ago, to my suprise I loved playing on it and want to buy my own, but while looking for a N64 I stumbled across the Gamecube and they appear to be both cheaper and have a larger 2D game library. So now for the newbie question of the day should I buy the N64 or Gamecube first? I think I will get both in the long run but I'm leaning toward the Gamecube because I can walk into a brick and morter store and buy both the console and games. But is that a good enough reason to go with the Gamecube over the N64.

Thanks for reading.

I would go for the gamecube, but it depends on which games you have already experienced on the N64. I bought one after having played greats like Mario 64, Goldeneye, Smash Bros., Banjo kazooie, Donkey Kong 64 etc. but immediately found that beyond these games, the N64 had nothing to offer me.

If you want 2D games, get a gamecube, the n64 wasn't designed for them and there are very titles in its library.
The gamecube also has some great 3rd party titles that are worth getting if you haven't experiened them before, such as Hitman 2, Tony Hawks, Geist, Resident Evil.

Just a note: I recently played the Resi 1 remake for Gamecube on my HDTV, and i must say that it still looks incredible and me and my friends threw around words like "photorealism" deep into the night. So if you do go for a GC, get that game.

Oh and also - you can get Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask for GC if that's a concern.

Phew.

Sonic Adventure 2 was so much better on Gamecube, but a fun game either way. I had Skies on Dreamcast, and any Gamecube owner should pick up this game. Awesome.

You really should. So many classic games for that system. Some of my favorites include Star Fox, Goldeneye, Turok, Cruisin' USA, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario 64, and Shadows of the Empire.

Being that you have the Gamecube now, I already seconded Sonic Adventure 2 and Skies, but you might also want to check out Metroid Prime, F-Zero FX, SUper Mario Sunshine, and Mario Kart Double Dash.

Make sure you give RE4 a try. They really perfected that one. The controls are so great, previous REs just feel clunky by comparison. It is to the GC what Ocarina of Time is to the N64, or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is to the PSX. It's an absolute must play.

RE4 is fantastic, but if you have a Wii available (or are planning to get one) then I'd recommend you get the Wii version instead.
