The PSStore takes longer to load than eShop. The friends list takes longer to load. The system takes longer to boot up. The only thing it consistently did faster was go back to the home menu ... but they were still really comparable.
So, the load times aren't really bad ... they're just ... un-nintendo-like.
To note .. none of the load times hit 30 seconds for me except for Netflix. The longest anything else took was like 25 seconds, most stuff only took about 18.
There's a lot of room in the hardware to improve these times, I think Nintendo is just focusing on actually getting everything going first. This is also the first RC version of the Wii U's OS ... so it will get better over time.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the loading issue. It really is rather un-Nintendo to have, what are honestly, average loading times on one of their systems. The Wii had very little loading in most games and the GC had practically none existent loading times.
What alleviated a lot of loading in miiverse and eshop etc was to do with network settings. I manually set my ip and DNS settings and I suddenly stopped having network drop outs and it sped the network based activity up considerably. Miiverse loads in less than 10 seconds now. I think the OS has trouble with DHCP... Just a speculation.
I never even bothered with the wireless. I simply unplugged the USB/Ethernet adapter from my Wii and plugged it into my Wii U before I even turned it on, hoping it would work (hadn't read anything about the compatibility of that device before I got my system). Fortunately, it did. It still took forever to download the update, but that was on Nintendo's end, not my internet and likely not my Wii U.
Speaking of which, is there a way to dictate priority of internet connections? Say I wanted to take the Wii U into another room and use my wireless. If I take it back into my main room and plug in the ethernet, will it default to ethernet or will it still try to run off of the inferior wireless? I don't want to need to tell it what to do each time.

Indeed, you can set one connection to be the priority one, and when that drops out, it will fall back to another one of your network settings preferences.
Just got a Wii U w/ TTT2 and ZombiU. Would have gotten Mario and Nintendo Land too, but a friend already has them. I'll probably get them eventually. For now I can just borrow them or play when I'm over there... Almost every weekend.

There's an interesting thought.
It does seem that most issues people are having are related to networking. Even the system freezes appear to be networking related. (Mine froze once, and it was also the first time it complained it couldn't connect to Nintendo Network)

Everywhere I go, there is a group of people that are litterally nit picking at every little thing that is "wrong" while ignoring everything great about it. One of the biggest "complaints" is the "long load times", sure it takes a few seconds to get through the menus, but it isnt like it ruins the console, and will most likely be patched soon. It seems that the Wii left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouth, and want to take it out on Nintendo's next console without giving it a chance. Its been said before, no modern console has been perfect at launch, there are bugs to work out with pretty much anything these days so get over it.
The best thing I can say, is dont knock it untill you try it, get a real idea of the console before regurgitating information from the internet. I swear, people want this console to fail for some reason.
*Please keep in mind, these thoughts are not specific to this forum, mostly in my other travels around the intenet*
TBH, the Wii U negativity is nothing compared to what the Vita has gone through (and still goes through).
I would like to know how the port of TTT 2 compares to the other ports.. Specifically the ps3 version since that is the one I have already.. I am leaning towards getting this since I have mostly an interest in fighters.. I was told that they are identical other than a few graphical glitches on the Wii U version but that there is obviously extra content on top of all the DLC content available day 1.. The only problem with this is that I was hoping this port would look superior.. I know the Wii U specs aren't the best, but they still are better than 360 and PS3.. I guess in due time we will see more games that are graphically enhanced from the HD twins..
BTW, just saw that a system update is available right now, I am almost done downloading it. Reports online say it should fix the lockup issue, and "improve user experience". So get those Wii's downloading.
