Dunpeal2064 - 19,527,000 - Stage 5 - 177 - Type C (Shot) - MAME

First two stages were very good for what I expect of myself, but I lost 2 lives stupidly on stage 3.

My score at the end of stage 1 was 2.8m. For comparison to using shot on the first midboss, I chained up to him, killing him with 177 chain, which brought y score at that point to 1.8m.

At the end of stage 2, with mild improvised chains, but a maximum bomb bonus throughout the boss, and 202 hit on him, I ended up with 7.3m

This game is so well balanced. Each stage progresses in difficulty nicely, and the patterns are just damn fun.

'No missed' stage 2 for the 1st time (yay). Blue ship's powered up spread shot helped big for stage 3.
Bombed like hell through stage 4... Couldn't keep good chains for crap, but I guess I'm happy for now.

I'm sucking ass, but I feel like I'm getting better at other shmups because of DDP. Does that sound rational?

Yup.

Or, I guess i should add that that happens to me too. I'll get pounded by some shmup for a while and pick up something else only to feel like I've become unwittingly more proficient.

Absolutely. DDP was in Cave's heydey when you were forced to dodge or else. No hypers, no bullet cancelling, no kakusei slowdown, just shoot and dodge (and bomb).

scores updated. let me know if I missed anything.

Hopefully I'll be able to take another crack at this tomorrow as I haven't played since Saturday due to some travel.

Is no one going to play the PS1 version? I might be inclined to spend some time with it if anyone's looking for some friendly competition for that port as well.

Observations/screenshots (the EE breakdown)

My typical Area 1 performance (minus about 15-20 100pt stars, this one featured an 88 hit combo on the boss - Type C/Laser)

Image

How well that MAXIMUM bonus can make your Area 2 pre-boss score

Image

According to MAME's HISTORY.DAT file -- info on the special Extend in Area 3:

* Hidden 1up player : In stage 3 is your one and only chance to pick up a 1up item. It is hidden in the giant red spaceship you will pass later in the stage. To get it, open all 6 side-boxes with your laser, before you destroy the main tower in the center of the ship. You are not allowed to use your smartbomb for these actions. Otherwise the 1up item would not appear in the ruins of the tower afterwards.

My next goal is to memorize the Area 2 boss shot patterns better -- if I can no miss and keep that MAXIMUM bonus..... I can shatter that old score.

I can't really devote time to this game until midway through December, but I am excited about playing it!

So, it actually seems that I was wrong, and that first midboss really isn't worth much, even with a large chain. I decided to still full chain the first half of the stage, but to drop it before the midboss, and I still ended up with about 2.3m.

It also seems that you can actually full chain the other levels, it just isn't possible to do it on stage 1. So there are a lot of potential points just on stage 2, although it seems like it would be pretty tough to pull off.

So far today, that stage 2 boss has killed me every run. That damn spread that he shoots right as he is about to die, that is twice as fast as the previous spread, is just getting me every time today.

this is how I keep dying too -- trying to learn Type A. The thing is when I make it to Stage 3, Type A seems so much more effective than B.
