Playstation Vita thread
Re: Playstation Vita thread
The appeal is kind of a holistic thing. I'd definitely say it or P3Portable are the two best entries to the series, as both give you full party control (previously you had to deal with AI and the PS1 games are obtuse at best). It does a good job of mating the various RPG clichés of dungeon crawling with the fact that you're still in high school and have to manage that aspect of your life. The relationship management makes for some interesting scenes that flesh out the NPCs around you, and you get the tangible benefit of making yourself stronger through completing them. It ends up being like your standard RPG sidequest but in a way that fits into the general world that makes sense, rather than the standard "I was waiting around for a hero to show up and clear the rats out of my basement". The combat is also very tactical; you have to deal with exploiting weaknesses while protecting your own. You can't just "heal through it". And the overall story does a really good job of having you discover what's going on, rather than the standard "here's the big bad guy, we must stop him." If you've played Baldur's Gate 1 it's has a similar feel; you start off dealing with some problems and slowly uncover the deeper cause that those problems are a symptom of.

see that part sounds quite dreadful to me. who'd want to spend 100+ more hours in that setting?MrPopo wrote: the fact that you're still in high school and have to manage that aspect of your life.

I really hated the setting of P3.dsheinem wrote:see that part sounds quite dreadful to me. who'd want to spend 100+ more hours in that setting?MrPopo wrote: the fact that you're still in high school and have to manage that aspect of your life.I even liked HS well enough, but teen drama sounds like a eye rolling story

Hell, I hated the gameplay of P3, too. lol. Every battle was nothing but whoring out an opponents' weaknesses... which that's every game ever made but here there are not any other options for success.
The story wasn't compelling enough to go on; especially since it took about 8 hours real-time in between each story-telling.
The way I understand things, P4 is basically another P3. I say skip it, dsh.

That, and Sony just made Music Unlimited $12 a year for PS+. Back when the service launched, it was a total joke, but now it has really turned into something worthwhile.dsheinem wrote:Yeah, with the PSN+ games you are getting like $150ish worth of retail games for "free" right off the bat with a new Vita and PSN+ sub. That's insane.retrosportsgamer wrote:I believe there is a Vita system update out there that has gotten positive reviews. Lot of bundles at $200 this holiday season, which is a nice price point to jump in on if you've been on the fence.
Plus the PS+ member stuff is crazy. Maybe a little momentum. I really like my Vita and the only physical games I have are Madden and Hot Shots Golf. Stardust + Pinball + Retro City Rampage are great.
Hoping to see some big price cuts on Uncharted and Gravity Rush this holiday season.

I was just about to sell my Vita, but I think PS+ is finally a little enticing since I own a PS3 as well. I just wish that 32gb memory card would drop in price.lisalover1 wrote:That, and Sony just made Music Unlimited $12 a year for PS+. I always wanted to play Stranger's Wrath. Although, now that I have an Xbox again I may pick up the original, but still, pretty neat to have it available on Vita.Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD will come to PlayStation Vita in North America on December 18th, and will be available as a digital-only download. This news comes by way of the Oddworld Inhabitants Facebook page, which also notes that Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is still approving the title. Thus, there’s no European release date yet.

Well, to each of his own, but P4 is noteworthy as it is set in the rural area of Japan, instead of the cities in previous Personas - which gives you a different perspective, many gamers that have lived in Japan has praised P4 accurately capture the feeling of living in the rural areas. P4 has a much more positive vibe than P3 in terms of storyline and character development.
But again, you have to build up relationship (S-Links) with your team and other NPC, as they are needed to strengthen your Personas. P4 Golden on the Vita is more polished than the original on PS2, P3P had to made some significant sacrifice for the PSP (no anime scene, just a series of cutscenes). And the random dungeon design does feel a bit outdated, but I have no problems of the gameplay that exploits enemy weakness for efficient damaging - this is much better than the zone weakness in Xenosaga 2.
In short, if you have never played any Persona series, and money is not an issue, go with P4 Golden right away, no need to play the previous 3, as the main storylines are not connected (well, P4 Arena does connect the characters from P3 and P4).

Let's be honest, Dragon Quest 1's combat system was much better than the zone weakness in Xenosaga 2.skyknight wrote:I have no problems of the gameplay that exploits enemy weakness for efficient damaging - this is much better than the zone weakness in Xenosaga 2.

I got Persona 4 for my birthday and have put around 12 hours in it so far and love it. It's definitely very "Japanese" but it doesn't bother me at all. Seems like there is a lot of meat to the game systems.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

There's plenty to do, but one of the hardest things is to decide which personas to fuse and the skills to transfer in creating new ones!Stark wrote: I got Persona 4 for my birthday and have put around 12 hours in it so far and love it.
