Together Retro: DoDonPachi
Re: Together Retro: DoDonPachi
Nah, I've played Dodonpachi a bunch. Never unlocked the second loop though.

Died, then realized I got an extend, then died again just before the 1up, -FML
Got tired of looking at the Saturn version's crappy horizontal picture mode, so I switched over to MAME. For the record, though, it looks MUCH better in tate mode. (As with DonPachi, and what seems like most vertical shooters with tate options.) It's still not quite as good as the arcade version, but if you're not too worried about breaking your neck, or have a reasonable tate setup, put that sucka in tate.
So twist of twists, I think I like DonPachi better than DoDonPachi. DoDonPachi might even be my least favorite in the series, although I probably haven't played enough of DaiFukkatsu or SaiDaiOuJou yet to say that definitively. I think it may be because DonPachi feels a lot like Cave still fresh out of Toaplan: It's tight, solid, and hasn't gone balls out yet. Everything after DoDonPachi feels like it's fleshed out the formula, and provides chaos without feeling unreasonable. Also, I'm not really digging the music in this one; plus no kickass announcer dude! WTF? Still going to work more on it because I'm pissed about how I died on that last run, and I'm not quite able to chain the first level like I'd like to yet.
Just to add, I'm sure everyone who plays goes for the bees, but knowing where all of the bees are in a stage and how to get them without messing up a chain is a huge point bonuses, as they give you 100, 200, 400, 800 and so on in that fashion through 1000s, 10,000s and 100,000s. By the end of the second level, you can get a 200,000 point bee, which is the same as a two-ship stock no-miss bonus.

If you somehow maintained the chain, it might be in your best interest to use the laser, but if you have no chain, you'll get many more points with the shot.dunpeal2064 wrote:On that midboss thing, I've never tried using shot. Does it really give that many points? Id think using the laser to hold the chain on the midboss would be worth more, especially if you haven't dropped the chain since the beginning of the stage.
I dunno, I think DDP has the best damn intro to a shmup ever. Play-by-play commentary and that sick Stage 1 music which re-appears in Stage 4!pierrot wrote: Everything after DoDonPachi feels like it's fleshed out the formula, and provides chaos without feeling unreasonable. Re: Together Retro: DoDonPachi
With a bit of practice its not tough to maintain a chain from the start to the st1 midboss, there are 2 or 3 spots where you have to be careful, and really milk the last few enemies... but its well worth it for the amount of points you get from him.
I know its possible to do this on each stage. Its the premise of chaining, hold a chain up to the biggest enemy in the stage, and keep it active. Since there is no way to hold a chain to the boss, its all about killing that midboss with a good chain, and keeping that bomb bonus going. Of course, chaining the 2nd half of each stage will still net you some good points.

I was clearing roughly 1.6 million after Area 1 until I started paying attention to the "boss parts' marked out by the crosshairs. Got close to 2 mil after doing that.dunpeal2064 wrote:With a bit of practice its not tough to maintain a chain from the start to the st1 midboss, there are 2 or 3 spots where you have to be careful, and really milk the last few enemies... but its well worth it for the amount of points you get from him.

Been scraping the chains and just focusing on not dying for now. Bombs all over the place and it seems to be working for now. Until I get the patterns down Ima need dem Bs.

Don't get discouraged, just bomb more. They call it bullet-hell for a reason.

Re: Together Retro: DoDonPachi
using Type B, I've been having trouble re-capturing my 7M score -- mostly hitting 4M. I started using Type A whose speed I love. A seems better on Stage 3 too... but consistently hitting 5M now. Hoping practicing with A will improve though. Type C is my worst.
ALSO, weird... I've been using the Saturn pad. My US Virtua Stick sucks. I tried using my PS2 stick via adapter, but I don't like how the buttons map and I'm too lazy to re-set them every time. So I've played with the pad a lot and I must say the Sat pad is the best pad I've ever used for shmups. I normally can't play shmups without a stick, but this dpad is so precise.

Still working out my preferred ship Type as well. Liking B for now.
Still...Stupid deaths abound. (Sideways scrolling still screwing with my coordination.)
Finally had a semi-decent run into stage 3, then bombed at ANY sign of trouble.
Last life = bomb like crazy...
