yeah I have it... same game + loading screens + better audio.

I have it as well, but for some reason my disc has no audio. None.

Plays the exact same, looks the exact same. Might be a bit smoother, but I haven't played them back to back.

So is the earthworm Jim special edition for sega CD rare? I just found that I have a complete copy at my dads house the other day while going through some of my old stuff. It seems like there aren't that many on Ebay.

Seems to be that way now. While it doesn't seem to be on the level of some RPGs, it does tend to be a fairly valuable title.

The other angle to it is that the Sega CD is the only console version of the Special Edition (there was also a Win95 version), which has a further additional level to the Genesis one, along with some other additions. So, in a way, it's probably the most comprehensive console one to get, and perhaps attractive to collectors for that reason.

To me, it's preferable to the Genesis version - though there are reasons to like several different versions of the game, I guess. The SNES version, while missing levels, does have nicer background graphics.

There is also the 5-game Arcade Classics disc, or whatever it's called. I think the added game is Super Monaco GP, but I forget exactly.
It's Sega Classics Arcade Collection, and a quick glance at my manual tells me that you are indeed correct, Super Monaco GP was the 5th addition.

I don't know if this counts, but Earnest Evans was released for the Genesis in the States and for the Mega CD in Japan. Like other Sega CD games, Earnest Evans uses RedBook Audio for the music and has pixelart cutscenes. I've only played the Mega CD version and to be honest, I don't plan on playing the Genesis version as Earnest Evans isn't all that good. Looking at screenshots, I imagine they both play the same.
