I actually prefer EWJ on the Genesis. I also prefer EWJ2 on the Genesis over the Saturn version for the bgm.

How come?
It's vinyl compared to a cd (I'm awful at analogies).

EWJ on the Genesis seems more gritty which seems fitting for the game. All ports of EWJ are great, but I like the rough edges that the Genesis provides.

Sol-Feace (Sega CD) > Sol-Deace (Sega Genesis)

Sold-Deace lacks the sound quality of Sol-Feace, although in game play they are identical. There are also no cutscenes on the Genesis game. I find it funny, since the game was a pack-in for the Sega CD and was ported later to the Genesis. I can't think of many games that were developed first for Sega CD and ported to cart later on. I say this now, because I'm sure a few examples are going to pop up! :-P

Well funny enough I'm going to say the Genesis version of EWJ is my favorite as well, I do love the grittiness to it. The colors and framerate are also a lot better than the SNES version and the game has more music. Down the Tubes just re-used Junk City's music in the SNES version, and the SNES version does not have that nasty intestines level (got to that one once when I was a kid, freaked me the hell out haha). The SNES version is definitely the inferior one here I'd say.

But yeah figured I'd point out the technical differences with the CD version.

On the other hand I think I prefer the SNES version of EWJ2. Not a fan of the Genesis music on that one. The Saturn music is insanely good too though.

Here's a three way match...
Genesis
SNES
Saturn

I really love the CD music of EWJ2 but can't say the same for EWJ1, so yeah definitely favor the Genesis version in that department.

In terms of music for Ecco 2 though, the opening title track on the Genesis version sounds awesome, though those synth pads in other tracks using the Genesis' sound chip sound kind of ugly IMO compared to the CD version. Kind of a toss-up for me if the gameplay and other content are the same between those two versions.
Ecco 2 is a toss up for me between the two versions, since I think the Genesis music for that one was really top notch and just insanely weird. Very dark stuff that really fits the vibe. Spencer Nilsen's music for the CD games gives them a way different vibe, but still mysterious and certainly feels like you're lost deep in the vastness of an ocean. I really love his work.

But as I mentioned above, the CD versions have checkpoints when the Genesis ones don't... so they are a bit easier, there's definitely some brutal parts in some levels that are cheap instant deaths and stuff, so those checkpoints help out a ton. So if anyone beats both Ecco's on the Genesis, that's pretty hardcore I'd say!

So it's a toss up on that one, I love both versions of 2, but probably prefer the first game on the CD. The CD music for 2 had more tracks and variety, amazing stuff, but the score for the first CD game was just something else and seemed darker, incredible stuff. There just ended up being a few tracks repeated towards the end though, but yeah.




I think the bad future of Tidal Tempest in Sonic CD sounds most similar to Spencer's Ecco stuff (he did Sonic CD US too)


But that's the first game, but yeah hard to say on the second one. Get both? Haha.

Man that soundtrack sounds awesome. I might have to try Ecco 2 without the checkpoints just for the music and see how that goes! :lol: Ecco 1 will probably be the CD version for me as it has new areas and other things (plus, checkpoints).

Also, the Terminator on Sega CD is a good candidate for "better than the Genesis version", though they are also almost considered different games. It has an awesome rock-driven soundtrack by Tommy Tallarico. Overall, I'd say the game is only okay though compared to other run n' guns like Gunstar Heroes (which conversely is amazing).

You mean Eternal Champs? It's kind of neither. It's like the diff between Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Hyper, y'know?

Another thing is Power Rangers on Gen and SCD are two totally diff games. Nothing in common.

So then it would be worth getting the Sega CD Eternal Champions if I already have the Genesis version. More characters and stages are what Super SFII added to the game, so I assume that Eternal Champions Sega CD did the same from that description.
