The guy who does the most of the Zelda reviews of CGRUndertow is bloody good. He does a fine job of explaining what it is about a game he loves so much, and expresses it very well. I've been trying to find a name for him.
Happy Video Game Nerd is pretty good too, as is Roo's stuff. Pretty much a lot of Retroware TV's shtick, basically.

The problem I see with his style is that (besides lacking coherent structure) it's neither comedic nor informative. And he lacks the kind of "flow" that people like TotalBiscuit and Mark (Classic Game Room) have. I think the videos where he talks about games with Rob are usually better than the solo videos.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Eh, I like Happy Console Gamer's casual style. Watching one of his videos is like shooting the shit with one of my gaming friends.
He's certainly loads better than all the pretentious "gaming historian" know-it-all types that have been flooding YouTube lately.
Capturing gameplay footage, writing a script and editing the footage in Sony Vegas so that it has a logical structure takes more time and effort than just talking in front of a camera, but it's a much better way of conveying information to the viewer. After all he started doing videos on youtube to promote underrated games like Ys and Phantasy Star, so he is aiming the videos at people who dont know much/anything about the games he is talking about.

Who does videos for retro game reviews? That junk is lame!
Re: Great youtube Retro game review series...
Oh haha, that's definitely him... was subscribed and everything. I guess I was just mixing him up with Happy Video Game Nerd (who I also like).dogman91 wrote:Happy Console Gamer? He's awesome as well! I love his enthusiasm... you can tell he truly loves video games. Tells great nostalgic stories of playing the games back in the day and does great coverage of game series. Good stuff.Xeogred wrote:Huh, they must have deleted this one guy I liked... he had some piercings, a hot girlfriend that randomly bought him some epic stuff one episode, and always had this big bookcase of games and stuff behind him. That's pretty vague, but yeah, any idea? Maybe I'm just not subscribed to him.

Above all and not least though guys, if you haven't, dig into navgtr. Get a group of friends together for this insanity:
"A challenge to Eidos, in Tomb Raider 3, create a storyline in which Lara gets breast cancer. Imagine the drama..."
"Why not have a game, where you have to find and drive to the hospital, before your wife delivers her baby. Now that would be fun!..."
"IT'S STILL A JAR FOLKS, A JAR ALL THE WAY"
Super Mario 64 vs Resident Evil - You read that right.
Goldeneye - "He jumps, he jumps again, from a different angle! What the heck! Is this some new funky directing style or what?"
Castlevania
Donkey Kong Country - AN INCREDIBLE SIGHT. When he talks about technology it's hilarious.
"Donkey Kong Country is truly perfect. If you do not get this amazing new generation of Donkey Kong madness, you are stupid! Yes I know that's insulting, but it's the truth!"
Beyond epic stuff and beyond hilarious how serious 90% of youtubers take these videos, even though they're obviously real and serious reviews as well... where the hell did they air this stuff in the 90's?

HCG is ok. Easy to listen to. But as you say, he's not really reviewing the game in a way that I at least would be able to find "value" in.Menegrothx wrote:I like some of his memory/story videos but he just doesn't know how to review games. He shouldn't put the word "review" in the title if he has no clue how to structure a review. I think Matt Chatt has the same problem, but Happy Console Gamer is way, way worse. Almost no gameplay footage what so ever, just comments like "yeah this is a nice RPG but the voice acting is HORRIBLE" and so on.dogman91 wrote: Happy Console Gamer? He's awesome as well! But he seems like a down-to-earth friendly kind of person. The type of gamer buddy I'd definitely hang out with. So that's good enough for me. lol

I'm sure lots of folks on here know of this guy already, but I'm gonna throw in Chrontendo
Guy basically is slowly going through and reviewing every single game to ever come out on the Famicom/NES, and he's doing it in chronological order. Pretty fascinating actually.

I really enjoy Futurematt5's videos. He posts a lot of shmup stuff, and has a pretty bizzare yet entertaining sense of humor.

Dr. Sparkle also chronicles Sega and PC Engine/TG16 in the same manner. Latest ChronSega is nearly 2 hours long!
A blog post of his http://chrontendo.blogspot.com/ a while back drew attention to this YouTube reviewer:

Good for a laugh if you "get it".
