Specific bands are still fun, but I see myself moving more towards slightly lighter stuff. Folk metal is becoming a favorite, and I'm moving in on more Epic/Legendary metal, especially that which deals with fantasy/high adventure/pirating/medieval shit. I'm also interested in getting into Doom and Sludge metal, but have little idea where to start.

So much metal, so little time.... suggestions always welcome.

Currently rocking Eluveitie, can't help but love them.
Eluveitie is in my top five now. I love that band. If you like folk metal, there's a lot of that influence in the last Leaves' Eyes album Meredead. I think it blows away their previous work

EDIT: As for pirate metal, have you heard Alestorm? That's about as pirate as you can get

Running Wild is the one and only pirate metal band.

Can't stand Alestorm, lol.

Gore/slam/"brutal" and most wanky technical death metal is generally crap in my opinion (with a few notable exceptions).

I stick to the old-school American (Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Obituary, etc) and Swedish (Entombed, Unleashed, etc) stuff, as well as some of the better melodic and technical bands.

I love death metal but listen to waaaaaaaayyy more doom and black metal.

I'll admit I do have a soft spot for the occasional Razorback Records band, but yeah I pretty much agree.

Every band that's ever ripped off Mortician (including Mortician themselves) is pretty awful. The world doesn't need any more br00tal drum machine slam bands.

And yes, Autopsy completely rules. They actually do grimy, primal death metal right.

Check out this song "Dust Devils and Cosmic Storms"

You know it figures they would be Finnish. It's amazing how many great bands come from that country.

That's true. It's a metal hotbed.

I was wondering if there was a Metal thread on here.

I listen to mostly Black, but I'm very picky.

Here's two of my favorite songs from two of my favorite bands:

Alatyr:

Adversus Semita:

If anyone knows any bands that play similarly, I'd love to hear about it!

I don't know a lot of black metal in that vein. Maybe BoneSnapDeez can help a little?

I'm mainly into OSDM

Yeah, seems like a lot of people here are. I've never been a huge Death fan regardless of when it was made. The only two death bands I listen to off the top of my head are Opeth and Edge of Sanity.
