I cannot find anything that can confirm this anywhere. Do I need motionplus controllers for Wii-U multiplayer on Nintendo Land or New Super Mario Bros U? Or can I get away with using standard Wii Remotes? I only bought one motionplus adaptor (for Skyward Sword as that's the only game that uses it that's worth playing). Am I pretty much fucked and will have to shell out another £120 to play 5 player multiplayer?

Only a few of the mini games need the motion plus, the zelda mini game, and I think the metroid one. I can confirm that most of the games can be played with standard controllers.

Why did they launch the system without the latest firmware pre-installed?

From my understanding, the features in the update are necessary for the online components...

Seems like something that the system should come out of the box with.

Because they didnt want any of the per-release (ie: review) consoles to have all of the full functionality. I assume this was to keep things a "surprise" for whatever reason.

Chances are some of this stuff wasn't finished or working properly before they had to start building the units for launch. That prep takes a few months.

Exactly. Any time you buy anything with drivers or firmware that are updated, the versions you get are likely at least a month old by the time you buy your product at the store. It takes time for the components to be made, then make it to the factory where the whole shebang is assembled. If there's a driver CD in the package with your printer or video card, the driver version on there probably went to the CD duplicator several months before your device was even stuffed in a box.

Good to know, I don't need motion plus remotes for NSMBU either?

There's no motion plus stuff in NSMBU. Just basic Wii Remote or GamePad.

Here are my nit-picks of the Wii U:

-Lower-res graphics. I am seeing lots of jaggies in the games I played and even the Wii U menu. The Wii U recognizes my TV as 1080p but I don't think they've figured out how to use that yet. I'd be surprised if anything is being rendered internally at a resolution greater than 540 or 640p or thereabouts.

-Inconsistent frame rates in Sonic Adventure Racing All Stars or whatever the dumb name of the game is. It seems to play fine but if you look closely the scenery seems to be going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.

-Surround sound isn't so hot. I haven't heard the system give out any discrete subwoofer yet. It could just be the games I'm playing but I think Sonic Adventure and Sega All Stars Racing 1 on the PS3 had some subwoofer. Can't remember.

-Menu is slow to switch apps, probably because it's loading an app into the controller.

-The controller screen does absolutely nothing for me.

-The system has 3 different controllers: Wii Pad, WiiMote, and the Wii U Xbox360 controller.

-I get the feeling that this is just gonna be like the Wii all over again because it seems to place too much emphasis on the controller screen gimmick.
