If you used your system often and just moved it every now and then it was fine back then. They weren't planning on you using your system infrequently 10+ years after the system was released. That said, if you locate a replacement, it is easy enough to swap out and you don't need a proprietary security bit to open the system.
is there a good guide on this (with pics) somewhere? My internal battery is still good. But I feel like I'd sleep better if I knew I had a plan for when it does die.

Maybe, but it is simple. The battery is very obvious on the same board as the controller ports. Easy to see when you take the cover off. Just match the rechargeable type, voltage, and polarity. Two easy points to de/resolder.
